The Opportunity

This is a superb opportunity as we wish to appoint an outstanding teacher to our Girls’ Sport team, at one of the country’s highest performing schools. NULS is renowned as a regional leader in Sports provision, possessing enviable facilities which have been enhanced immeasurably with recent the opening of a state-of-the-art £4.5 million Sports development, making this appointment particularly attractive and opportune for the successful candidate. The new Teacher of Girls’ Sport and Physical Education will report to the Head of Girls’ Sport and Director of Sport, and will be expected to offer strong and progressive teaching and coaching as they work closely with our talented specialists and individual sporting leads and coaches to build on our existing strengths. The successful candidate will also be able to teach one or both of GCSE and A level PE and be able to contribute and impact within our highly ambitious Sports Department, helping them to fulfil their strategic goals.

NULS is Staffordshire’s largest HMC co-ed independent school teaching to Preparatory, Seniors and Sixth Form. NULS was founded c.1602 and its sporting tradition and calibre is renowned in the area and indeed the region. Our 35 acre site offers hugely expansive and impressive facilities including extensive playing fields, a designated cricket ground and pavilion, new multi-lane indoor cricket facility and outdoor nets facilities, superb swimming pool, floodlit astro turf pitch, multiple tennis courts and so forth. In addition, the school’s new sports complex means the school now has the benefit of two sports halls, one with indoor tiered seating for spectators. The newly completed sports complex also contains a cardio fitness room and a strength and conditioning suite which supports its Elite Athlete Programme and Scholars.

Girls’ Sport at NULS

Hockey

The school’s Hockey provision enjoys an extensive coaching set-up with players benefitting from the school’s full-size astro turf pitch with floodlights. The school and staff are proud to have enabled a series of players to beyond regional selection, and to move into national team selection processes for their age range. The school also enjoys a close working relationship with North Staffordshire Hockey Club, who use the school as a regional base and where many players also train. The school also has a history of guiding players into regional and national elite playing pathways.

Netball

The school benefits from excellent coaching and outstanding facilities in this key sport. The school has numerous courts, indoors and outdoors, with the school’s new additional Sports Hall elevating netball provision as the department adds two further indoor courts. One of these courts is of super league standard, with banked seating provision for spectators, electronic scoreboard and so on, which is enabling the school to explore external pathways for elite netballers with premier league clubs. The school enjoys a close working relationship with Loughborough Lightening, being a regional Academy Hub for this elite super league team.

Cricket

Cricket continues to go from strength to strength at NULS with the school delighted to enjoy a position in the prestigious Top 100 Schools listings according to The Cricketer, since 2020. The school also operates NULS Cricket Academy on the school campus, run by our resident professional and coaching team. With a designated principal cricket ground, with pavilion, a second cricket square and pitch on our playing fields and an astro wicket, NULS is equipped exceptionally well. In addition, the school possesses a four lane outdoor astro turf net facility to permit off-season outdoor practice and coaching too. These facilities are complemented by a superb, new indoor cricket net facility which provides multiple lanes for all-year round cricket coaching. The Cricket facility and Academy utilise the school’s bowling machines and broader facilities for its Senior and Prep pupils in coaching sessions and co-curricular clubs.

Swimming

The school’s pupils at Prep and Seniors feel the benefit of having two specialist swim teachers at school. With an impressive 25 metre swimming pool, swimming is an integrated part of the curriculum and co-curricular programme. Pupils enjoy wonderful access to swimming opportunities, from beginners’ classes through the school’s own Swim School, with elite coaching in the school’s Swim Squad. Life-saving and Water-polo are also part of the sports teams provision. With the school now embarking on a new partnership with the area's premier swimming club, this area of sport is poised to elevate further as it complements the ambitions being pursued in all sporting domains.

Broader sporting provision

The details above, relating to some principal sports, provides a snap-shot of just some of the school’s main team sports but NULS prides itself in the breadth of its sporting opportunity. The school’s students have an unparalleled record of success in regional cross county, play tennis to a very high standard with the school very proud of its accreditation as a national Badminton centre with elite coaching available in this valued sporting field.
