Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and energetic Teacher of History and Geography to join one of Kenya’s leading schools – in fact, one of the top schools on the whole African continent.

Kenyan education is recognised as generally excellent; about a dozen UK-style schools are at the forefront of Kenyan education, and Peponi is at the forefront of those schools. As an HMC member school, it enjoys an outstanding reputation and educates over 300 children aged 11 to 18 from a cosmopolitan mix of local and expatriate families.

Our Humanities Faculty teaches seven different subjects which together give our pupils a broad and thorough understanding of how human life has reached the point it is at and where it is heading. We seek to develop a student who not only sees but appreciates; who not only hears but listens; who not only looks but sees; who not only asks but questions; and one who not only says but expresses themselves.

The breadth of our Humanities offer means there is plenty to interest and excite every pupil. History and Geography are key subjects and our IGCSE and A level courses provide a broad global perspective that prepares our pupils for the world they will live and work in, whether they will be in Kenya or elsewhere, and whether they will stay in one country or move around.

We are now seeking an exceptional Teacher of History and Geography who is truly enthusiastic about their teaching and can help take the Faculty to new highs.  You must be an excellent classroom practitioner and you MUST have good experience of teaching both subjects to IGCSE standard and, ideally, A Level.

You must be forward thinking and imaginative, with fresh ideas and energy. What we really want is someone who can genuinely excite and inspire our pupils, someone who is passionate about the Humanities in general, and someone who will go the extra mile to ignite those same passions in the students and help them go further than they ever dreamed they could. You must be able to support each individual’s growth and development, encouraging them to achieve and be the best they can be.

You do not need to have had experience in the independent sector, but you do need a strongly can-do mindset.

As a boarding and day school, we will also expect you to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole. This will be enjoyable because of the happy, collegiate atmosphere, and we have a wide range of pastoral programmes and extra-curricular activities.

Our staff enjoy excellent working conditions including accommodation, a generous and comprehensive reward package, and significant amounts of personal and professional development. There is a great team spirit in our Common Room. If you join us you will achieve great job satisfaction and excellent experience, and you will enjoy a first-class quality of life in a wonderful location. Kenya is a fabulous country.

If you’re excited by the sound of all this, please download the briefing brochure and the application form. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have and completed forms should be emailed direct to our Headmaster, Mark Durston, at applicants@peponischool.org

Closing date for applications: 11 am on Monday, 6th February. We’d welcome earlier applications, of course, so please get in touch as soon as you can.

For candidates in Kenya, interviews will take place at Peponi School during week commencing 20th February. For candidates in the UK, we will be interviewing face to face in London on 14th-17th February. Candidates elsewhere and those unable to meet us in person will be offered online interviews on dates that are mutually convenient, starting as soon as we receive applications.

Peponi School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants will be subject to child protection screening, including checks with past employers, the UK Disclosure and Barring Service and/or authorities in other countries.
