The History and Politics Departments combine to form one of the largest in the school and have been very successful over a long period of time. At present, there are seven principal members of staff.

In the Lower School, ages 11-14, the course is based largely upon the national curriculum. We have recently introduced the Cambridge IGCSE and there is usually about a 70% uptake. Those students attaining an A*/A grade has averaged 61% over the past three years.

In the Sixth Form there are usually eight History and four Politics groups; all History groups are taught the AQA specification and results are well above national averages. The teaching of the History groups is shared across the Departments. The current topics covered are: The British Empire c1857-1967 and The American Dream 1945-1980 with Nineteenth Century Germany being taught as the Coursework element. A Level Politics is taught using the Edexcel syllabus which includes the compulsory study of UK Politics, UK Government and Political Ideas. For the optional component, we focus on Global Politics, which has strong links with History owing to its emphasis upon 20th Century History and the implications of US hegemony on world order. Whilst Politics is mainly taught by a specialist, two History colleagues also contribute to its teaching. Many of our students go on to pursue either History or Politics and International Relations at degree level with four students successfully applying to Oxbridge in the last three years.

The Departments are very fortunate to teach in a new Humanities Block which has six well-equipped teaching classrooms and a spacious office.  The Departments have created a friendly culture of creativity and sharing alongside a determination to ensure the students are the best version of themselves.

Applications are invited from NQTs and experienced teachers in the independent and maintained sectors.  A willingness to become involved with sports teams/extra-curricular activities such as Model UN would be an advantage
