Job overview

The King John School is a heavily oversubscribed 11-18 mixed comprehensive of over 2000 students, of which approx. 400 are in the sixth form. As a school our Progress 8 measure places us in the top 25% of the country. Over 70% of our students achieved GCSE A*-C in English & Maths and we are recognised by the Department of Education for our proactive promotion of the English Baccalaureate within our curriculum. The school enjoys an excellent reputation, and has been graded at the end of September 2013 as ‘Outstanding’ across all key areas.

The school has good staff retention and is wholly committed to continued professional development. To this end, all children of appointed teaching staff are eligible to apply for an automatic place at King John School. The school offers free healthcare through Benenden Healthcare Scheme which employees are entitled to join.

The King John School offers a high quality educational experience through a broad curriculum and a caring, friendly environment and sets the highest expectations for all. Through high quality teaching and learning and exceptional wide ranging enrichment opportunities, the school seeks to cultivate students’ motivation, confidence and intelligence. The school strives to be at the forefront of school improvement and innovation and invests heavily in the creation of a learning community and to this end a new extension to the Sixth Form, Humanities building and state of the art Assembly Hall have been constructed recently to accommodate the growing number of students wishing to join us. We all have the responsibility to learn from others and to contribute to professional development of our colleagues. It is through this collaborative learning culture that together we can support our students to gain the competitive edge over other applicants to leading universities, prestigious apprenticeships and the subsequent world of work.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding full-time teacher of History with the potential to teach at all Key Stages to join our supportive and highly effective faculty. If you feel you have a passion for teaching History and possess a creative approach to teaching, then we would love to hear from you.

There may be a possible Assistant Head of Year opportunity in addition to the teaching role if a pastoral role is something that interests you too.

Our school is a dynamic learning environment, where all students are encouraged to aspire towards their very best. We are growing rapidly and our reputation in the local area is attracting an increasing number of external students to the Sixth Form who wish to continue their studies with us. We challenge our students to achieve ambitious goals and to never settle for second best. If you feel you could contribute to this ethos and enhance it further, please contact us.

The school has an excellent NQT programme.

Closing date: Tuesday, 2nd May 2017.

A very warm welcome to The King John School, a large, mixed comprehensive with a well-established sixth form.

The school was created in 1949, and since then has served the ever-growing communities of Thundersley and Benfleet, as well as welcoming students from further afield. It is a popular, oversubscribed school where students’ very high attendance and levels of achievement reflect their commitment and enjoyment of school life.
