Required for a September 2025 start We are looking for a Teacher of History to join our Humanities department.

The Humanities Department in Coop-Academy Failsworth is a dynamic and forward-looking subject area which has made great progress in recent years. It is made up of the discrete subjects of geography and history.

At Key Stage 3 the faculty has a curriculum that is more ambitious than the National Curriculum. The strong schemes of work provide the students with the foundations of knowledge, skills and understanding required for further study at GCSE. At the same time the imaginative pedagogy fosters a good degree of enjoyment, making the subjects very popular option choices at Key Stage 4. The subjects both follow diverse and engaging topics which allow our students to have a broad understanding of the past and their place in modern society.

Key Stage 4 begins in Year 10 following the AQA GCSE for both subjects.

In history – students study the following topics at GCSE:

·        America 1920 – 73

·        Britain: Power and the People

·        Norman England

·        Conflict and tension – 1918 – 39

In geography – students study the following topics at GCSE:

·        Living with physical environment e.g. volcanoes and earthquakes

·        Challenges in the human environment e.g. redevelopment

·        Fieldwork

Geography and History are taught separately throughout the school by a team of ten specialist teachers and all teach across the age and ability range. Within humanities all classes are of mixed ability.

The school timetable operates on a weekly cycle of 5 one hour periods on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. On a Thursday the periods are 50 minutes and this enables a focussed CPD session to take place in the afternoon. In Year 7, 8 and 9 students receive one or two lessons each week depending on the subject. This increases to three lessons each week in years 10 and 11.

Classrooms on the Humanities wing are well equipped with a desktop computer, internet access, a Promethean interactive whiteboard, a dry wipe whiteboard and storage cupboards.

The staff base on the humanities wing is the focal point for the department. There are a number of desktop computers to enable staff to plan and prepare lessons. All lessons are centrally planned by the department. Lessons are adapted the teachers using responsive teaching to ensure that the needs of each class are met.

Values and vision

Co-op Academy Failsworth's main focus is the achievement and happiness of all students. The school wants pupils to reach their full academic and personal potential, and works to help them discover and develop their individual skills and talents so that they leave as fulfilled, successful and confident young adults ready for the challenges and opportunities of a modern and a ever-changing society. Community is at the heart of the school and parents are encouraged to get involved and play an active, present role in their children’s education, enabling all students to benefit from a strong support system both in class and during their home lives. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered to all pupils across the year groups, allowing for them to get involved in clubs outside of the classroom and benefit from new experiences, meeting new people and enhancing their skills and interests. These include sports clubs, photography lessons, choir practice and rock band.

Ofsted

"Much of teaching is now good"

"The leadership team, with strong support from the   Interim Executive Board (IEB) and the Local Authority, have embedded a clear   vision and ambition for the future of Failsworth School."

"Pupils behave appropriately around the building, where they are unfailingly polite and respectful"

"Pupils who met with inspectors were of the view that in many classes work was now harder, questioning more challenging and the marking and feedback they received more helpful."

Ofsted recognised "The school is popular with the local community. It is oversubscribed and the great majority of parents and carers who completed a school parental survey were supportive of the school and its leadership."
