Cokethorpe is an independent day school providing education to boys and girls from the age of four to eighteen. Situated in beautiful parkland just ten miles outside Oxford, the School has a strong reputation for providing a rigorous, broad curriculum underpinned by a firm belief in the principles of a liberal education, and a knowledge that all pupils have the capacity for excellence if encouraged to be ambitious and take responsibility for their learning.

The School has a strong co-curricular programme and, whilst excellence in the classroom is paramount, all members of the Common Room are encouraged to see themselves as playing a role in this wider curriculum. It is a busy, purposeful school in which positive relations develop and exciting and varied opportunities arise.

The Department consists of four teachers reporting to the Head of History and Politics. Two members of the Department are on the Senior Management Team. It is a dynamic environment, with staff contributing extensively to the extra-curricular offering of the School whilst also reflecting creatively on how to best teach pupils to embrace the challenge of the discipline.

Pupils currently study the Edexcel IGCSE syllabus in the Fourth and Fifth Form, focusing on America in the inter-war years, Russia under Stalin, Nazi Germany and the Changing Nature of Conflict c.1936-c.2003. At Sixth Form, the department has recently transitioned to the AQA History A Level programme, with students studying China 1936-97 and British Imperial History. Their Independent Investigations focus on the causes of the American Civil War. Students also follow the AQA specification in Government and Politics.

The Department is proud of its examination results at both GCSE and Sixth Form. Last year, 50% of the cohort gained grades 8 or 9 at IGCSE, and 66% gained A* or A grades at A Level. It is a consistently popular choice for Sixth Form study. Uptake at GCSE is similarly strong, with History being the most popular ‘optional’ subject. Fewer students opt to study Government and Politics at A Level, although it enjoys a committed following and is growing in popularity. The department is far from complacent in its approach to teaching and learning and is determined to implement strategies that will ensure that standards are consistently high

Cokethorpe School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
