Job overview

Alcester Academy is a highly successful 11-16 school with 640 students currently on roll. Alcester is located between Studley and Stratford-Upon-Avon. The school has an excellent reputation based on examination results, a progressive approach to educational development and a strong sense of community. At our last inspection, Ofsted judged us good with a view to returning very soon in order to re-assess this decision towards an outstanding judgement. The schools’ overall Progress 8 score for 2019 was 0.77, which once again places us as one of the top performing non-selective schools in Warwickshire, and in the top 5% nationally.

Further details about the school can be found on our website (www.alcesteracademy.org.uk), including our current curriculum information. Our Twitter feed (@AlcesterAcademy) is another excellent source for a feel of the school.

The History Department at Alcester Academy is proud of the progress students make. The department has a proven track record of success at GCSE with many students going on to study history at A level and beyond. We strive to make history engaging and accessible for all students and the success of this has been demonstrated by history being a very popular subject when options are chosen.

In year 7 students are first taught to develop their historical skills in order to be more effective historians and have a better understanding of the past. The knowledge, skills and understanding that students gain is then applied throughout year 7 as students study a range of events and time periods, including the Norman Conquest, the murder of Becket, the Crusades, King John and Magna Carta, the Peasants’ Revolt and the Tudors.  In year 8 students study the following topics: The French Revolution, The Slave Trade, WW1, the rise to power of Hitler, WW2 and the Holocaust.

During our three year KS4 structure at Alcester Academy, students follow the AQA GCSE History course. Students study 4 units: Health and the People, Germany 1890-1945, Elizabethan England and Conflict and Tension in Asia 1950-1975.

This is a temporary post covering a maternity leave

The successful applicant will be an outstanding classroom practitioner. We are particularly interested in candidates who revel in promoting a real interest in history.

Applications will only be accepted on the Academy application form attached or available on the  web site www.alcesteracademy.org.uk  and strictly no agencies.

Values and vision

Alcester Academy aims to provide a high-quality curriculum that allows all its students to fulfil their academic potential. The school works to achieve this through good teaching, effective use of data to drive interventions, and a determination that its students will achieve.

The secondary school wishes to teach students the importance of building trust through truth, and to do the right thing when no one is looking. It also strives to instil in students the value of curiosity in extending and developing their knowledge, and the value of courage in innovating and creating. Pupils are supported to develop enquiring minds.

Ofsted report

“The school’s work to keep pupils safe, and to teach them how to keep themselves safe, is highly effective. Attendance is high. Lessons typically involve mature discussion in which pupils respect and learn from each other’s views. Teachers develop pupils’ literacy and numeracy skills most effectively. Work is well planned to build on what pupils already know and understand. Teachers provide additional challenge for those who excel, and support any who are at risk of falling behind. Well-planned and varied strategies reflect the academy’s commitment to supporting disadvantaged pupils.”
