Teacher of History  (MPS)

1 year maternity cover

Required for September 2019

We are seeking to appoint an experienced or newly qualified history teacher to join our history department.  History is a very popular subject at GCSE and A level and you will be one of a team of three full-time specialist teachers.

Pickering is a lovely area in which to live and work and we are on the edge of the beautiful North Yorkshire Moors National Park, 30 minutes from both Scarborough and the city of York.

Lady Lumley’s School is a successful, mixed 11-18 comprehensive school with hardworking students and committed, caring staff where every individual really does matter.  We were inspected by Ofsted in February 2016 and judged again to be a good school.

Continuous professional development is key to our success and we have an excellent staff induction programme.

We are a High Performing School and an enhanced mainstream school.  We have 876 students on roll including 134 in the Sixth Form.

Further details are available from Mrs Kathryn Holbrook, Headteacher’s P.A.,

Email: kholbrook@ladylumleys.net, or on our website: www.ladylumleys.n-yorks.sch.uk.

Closing date for applications is Thursday 21st March 2019 by 9 a.m.

Dear Applicant,

If you are a leader who is ambitious, inspirational and committed to excellence, then this appointment will present you with a unique opportunity.

Firstly, thank you for expressing interest in becoming the new Headteacher at Lady Lumley’s (11-18) School in Pickering, North Yorkshire. We hope the information provided helps your decision-making, and we encourage you to chat informally and confidentially with James Annetts at North Yorkshire County Council who can organise a safe visit to the school.

Over the years the school has, deservedly, built a reputation for its teaching and learning, sustained educational outcomes and its sixth form provision. Many parents, both locally and from as far away as Scarborough, choose Lady Lumley’s every year as the school to educate their children. As the only 11-18 school in the local area we are uniquely placed, and together we aim to ensure that Lady Lumley’s becomes a beacon of excellence in secondary education.

From reading our recent Ofsted inspection and our advertisement, you will see that we have been placed into the ‘serious weaknesses’ category, and our sponsor designate is Scalby Learning Trust. While this Ofsted judgement came as a shock to many associated with the school, the description of Lady Lumley’s as being a school of contrasts is accurate, and the appointment of our new Headteacher will mark a turning point.

While you will lead a school which has been judged ‘good’ for the quality of education and for its sixth form provision, we are clear that there is a significant journey for Lady Lumley’s to travel. As a leader you will bring the skills needed to raise expectations and create a culture of aspiration that ensures Lady Lumley’s drives for and achieves excellence in all aspects of provision.

Together with the support of the IEB, NYCC and Scalby Learning Trust, you will ensure our curriculum model is broad and balanced, and one that works for every student. A key focus for our new Headteacher is to develop relationships with the wider community, to rebuild the trust that has been undermined by the recent inspection.

We are excited about the new partnership with Scalby Learning Trust, and what this will bring to our school. Without question you will be given the tools, support and professional networks needed to thrive as our new Headteacher.

For an informal, confidential conversation about the role, please contact James Annetts at North Yorkshire County Council, who has been engaged to support us with recruitment to this key role - email james.annetts@northyorks.gov.uk or telephone 07966 261249.

On behalf of the IEB, thank you for considering becoming the Headteacher at Lady Lumley’s and we look forward to meeting you and reading your application.

Yours faithfully,

Malcolm Dawson OBE         David Read
Chair of the IEB                  CEO Scalby Learning Trust
