Job overview

An opportunity to work in the only non-private Academy in London that offers both International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes at KS5

Our school

Westminster Academy is an Outstanding International Business and Enterprise academy and IB World School serving a multi-ethnic community of 11-18 year olds in Central London. The Academy is proud of its work to improve outcomes for students in an inclusive, supportive environment. Our longstanding 1:1 device programme allows WA to thrive as both an on-site and remote learning environment.

Our Humanities department

As a member of the Humanities department, you would work alongside a highly motivated team of teachers and leaders who inspire a passion for their subjects - Geography, History, Religious Studies, Citizenship and Business - and who collaborate across departments on exciting whole school initiatives. The department has a constant focus on the quality of teaching and learning, supported by weekly peer-to-peer professional development. Our outstanding extra-curricular provision takes advantage of our London connections, such as opportunities with the Holocaust Educational Trust, Solutions Not Sides and the Living in Harmony project by the Woolf Institute/Cambridge University. The Humanities department also plays a significant role in the delivery of the new RSHE curriculum, which is statutory for all schools. A successful candidate would most likely be required to teach outside of their subject specialism for a small portion of their teaching allocation.

Our Humanities curriculum and pedagogy

The Humanities department achieves outstanding results, with excellent progress achieved at both KS4 and KS5. We prepare our students for both History and Geography GCSE by teaching challenging, engaging content from Year 7 onwards. In 2019, the GCSE cohort achieved fantastic results, with 72% and 61% passing at grade 5 and above in History and Geography respectively. Students continued to achieve impressive outcomes during the pandemic. Teaching and learning in Humanities gives students opportunities to use Chromebooks to develop their research and analytical skills, and they are challenged to develop critical thinking and communication skills as they evaluate alternative views and ideas.

The ideal candidate will be:

● An excellent classroom teacher who is committed to the success of each individual student

● Flexible to teach other subjects within the Humanities department

● Experienced in teaching the relevant subject(s) with a relevant university degree

● Able to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to their own professional growth and development

● Passionate about their subject to inspire our students

What we offer:

● A competitive salary and benefits package

● Sign up incentives available for experienced IB educators

● An excellent programme of continuing professional development

● Relevant training with the International Baccalaureate for teachers of Key Stage 5

● A commitment to staff well being, including access to the local gym, weekly fitness sessions, staff social events, Perkbox membership with associated benefits.
