Job overview

Teacher of History (Maternity Cover) at Cokethorpe School, Oxfordshire required from November 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable historian to join a strong and experienced department for a long-term maternity placement.

The successful candidate will be able to teach across a wide ability and age range and should be excited by the prospect of Sixth Form teaching, with the confidence to approach an entirely linear two year course.

This post would suit an innovative and ambitious Historian wishing to play an active role in working with others to contribute to the development of the department.  Applications are welcome from candidates at all stages in their careers, with a full and recognised induction programme in place which will lead to QTS for NQTs.

History Department

The Department consists of four teachers reporting to the Head of History.

Currently we follow the Edexcel IGCSE syllabus in the Fourth and Fifth Form. Our topics are Russia in Revolution, Russia under Stalin, Nazi Germany and the Changing Nature of Conflict c.1936-c.2003. In the Sixth Form we currently offer CIE Cambridge Pre-U for the Upper Sixth, and the candidate would be expected to contribute to the teaching of the China under Mao component. In the Lower Sixth, we offer AQA History, teaching the British Empire and History of China components. Existing knowledge of modern Chinese history, or an enthusiasm for learning new content, would be helpful.

The Department is proud of its examination results at both GCSE and Sixth Form. Last year 71% of the Fifth Form cohort (taught in mixed ability groups) gained A*-A grades, and 100% gained A*-C. It is a consistently popular choice for Sixth Form study, with a quarter of the current Lower Sixth cohort undertaking the subject. However, the department is far from complacent, and is determined to implement strategies that will ensure that standards, and uptake for the subject at both GCSE and A Level are consistently high. This represents an exciting challenge, and the right candidate will play an important role in supporting the Head of Department and his team in exploring and evaluating new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Further information, including a full job description and details on how to apply together with an academic application form, can be found on the school's website.  Deadline for Applications:  Noon, Monday 2 October 2017.  Interviews:  Tuesday 10 October 2017

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.  Applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
