Job overview

Horizons Academy Bexley is an alternative provision academy which works in close partnership with the two SEMH schools in London Borough of Bexley.  All three schools have recently joined London South East Academies Trust (LSEAT) having worked together for a number of years as a hard federation, New Horizons Federation.  Our schools provide education for pupils from Year 1 to Year 11 as well as working closely with our stakeholders in creating solutions for pupils at risk of permanent exclusion.  Horizons Academy is an all through school which is commissioned by the Local Authority to provide education for permanently excluded pupils but also offers a broad range of preventative programmes and reintegration support to enable pupils to access education which is most appropriately matched to their needs.

We are currently seeking an experienced Teacher that can deliver ICT who is also willing to deliver Careers to pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4.  It is our aim that all of our long term pupils at Key Stage 4 are entered for Functional Skills ICT,  the delivery of the Careers Programme is supported by our own Careers and Transition Coordinator and links closely to our work related learning and transition package.  The successful candidate will join a committed team of staff who strive to achieve best outcomes for our learners and work relentlessly with them to address the social, emotional and behavioural difficulties which have been a barrier to success in mainstream schools.  We are very much a learning environment and promote high expectations of behaviour and aspirational goals for all of our pupils whilst acknowledging that progress requires endless patience and perseverance to overcome the often low self esteem and external issues presented by our population.

This is an opportunity for experienced and skilled practitioners to make a real difference to children’s lives.  A proven background in managing challenging behaviour alongside evidence of securing successful academic outcomes are essential requirements.

If you have enthusiasm, commitment and a desire to work with some of the most vulnerable and complex young people in our community, we would welcome your application.  High aspirations and a relentless approach towards excellence are the key skills we are looking for along with evidence of previous outstanding classroom teaching.

School Context

Horizons Academy Bexley provides high quality education and support to pupils in Key Stages 1-4, who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of exclusion from their mainstream school. We also provide a short-term provision at our Satellite centre for learners, who are unable to attend school because of a medical need.

We focus on early intervention, offering a range of services from short term respite to longer term education for students in KS4.

Our aim in KS1 – 3 is to re-integrate the learners back into a mainstream or specialist school via our ‘Refocus programme’. We work closely with external agencies and our partner schools to identify the needs of the child, develop the child’s ability to learn, so that each learner feels confident about being in the classroom.

School Vision

At Horizons Academy, we aspire to provide the best possible experience for all of our pupils, which is underpinned by our core values of Relationships, Respect, Resilience and Readiness.

Our aim is to create a positive learning environment, where each pupil feels safe and happy to contribute to the wider school community. All pupils that attend Horizons Academy can expect support to achieve their goals, whether that be towards positive outcomes at the end of Key stage 4 or an opportunity to be re-integrated into a mainstream or specialist setting.

Our curriculum has been developed to focus on English, Maths and Reading, aimed at closing any gaps in knowledge, so that each pupil is prepared for the next stage of the educational journey. We believe that these fundamental skills are essential to helping pupils become well rounded citizens, who are able to productively contribute to the wider community.

Ultimately, we want all learners to feel confident about their future and in their own ability to live a successful, meaningful life.
