Tes is seeking an exceptional Teacher of Mandarin to join an outstanding independent school in East Sussex.

18% of its pupils come from international backgrounds, so the teaching and use of modern languages sits at the heart of the school. The faculty delivers the teaching of French, Spanish, German and Mandarin to non-native speakers within the curriculum, as well as preparing native speakers for exams in their mother tongue as a co-curricular option. The language classrooms are housed together, and are well-resourced with audio facilities, interactive whiteboards and a set of iPads, and separate IT rooms are regularly used for whole-class ICT lessons.
The new Teacher of Mandarin will be solely responsible for the delivery of the Mandarin curriculum in First Year (Year 9), at GCSE and at Pre-U, as well as preparing native speakers of Mandarin and Cantonese for the A Level Chinese exam, using the Edexcel examination board. The successful applicant will therefore need a very high degree of proficiency in Mandarin and knowledge of Cantonese, as well as a full understanding of the British examination system.

They will be passionate in their approach to the teaching of Mandarin, and determined to achieve the very best results. Alongside the obvious measures of success, such as exam performance, university applications and pupil feedback, we will be looking to the new teacher of Mandarin to inculcate a very real sense of wonder and excitement in their students, and to be massively demanding of them. In addition, we have high expectations that the right candidate will be hungry to develop the subject within the Faculty. The post would suit an experienced colleague or a newly qualified teacher who at interview is able to demonstrate that they have enormous potential to quickly become a brilliant teacher. The ability to teach another modern language or subject and to make a significant contribution to the school’s extra-curricular programme would be a distinct advantage."
