Job overview

The Mathematics & Computing teams are very strong and supportive departments which benefit from strong and supportive leadership.

COMPUTING at St George’s College, Weybridge

Our Computing team is a forward-thinking and successful department which has benefited from strong and supportive leadership. We are looking to appoint someone who is enthusiastic about Computing and enjoys teaching the subject to all levels and abilities. The capability and willingness to teach to GCSE and A Level is essential and there is an expectation to take on some specific responsibility within the Department.

We are now in the fourth year of delivering Computing, with our first-ever Sixth Form class completing the second year of the A level course. The main programming language for GCSE and A Level is Python, so a high level of competence in this language is essential. Alongside this, familiarity with HTML  and CSS, JavaScript, LMC, SQL, Qt and Adobe Creative Cloud is advantageous.

In Key Stage 3, students receive one lesson (50 minutes) weekly and study a range of projects. The theory of binary numbers and computer systems is learnt along with BYOB, Game Maker and JavaScript. At GCSE level, there are three lessons weekly and this rises to seven at A Level. Numbers of students taking the course are solid; students are given a clear understanding as to the opportunities and demands of the course.

This is a department which achieves high results, where the ethos is founded on teamwork between teachers and in positive, helpful relationships with students. At GCSE, students have started the OCR J276 specification. Results from the first cohort were outstanding with a 100% A*- B grade success rate of which 50% of grades were A* and last year 100% A*/A grades. One student scored full UMS marks across the three units. The A Level students are working towards the OCR H446 qualification; they take every opportunity to further their knowledge and are currently competing in the Cyber Centurion competition. Support for students applying to Oxford and Cambridge is provided. Members of the department are expected to contribute to the various activities available, including surgeries and revision classes to support GCSE and A Level students, as well as sessions for Controlled Assessment.

Students are offered a variety of ways to learn, e.g. with hands-on projects, practical exercises, online programming environments and paired programming. The department is very well resourced with BBC Microbits, Android phones and a range of software. The VLE is used extensively, both for resources and to set homework tasks and track achievement. There is a department office and teaching takes place in Computing classrooms, all of which have a projector, speakers, IWB and headphones.

Continuous professional development is crucial in this fast-moving subject. Members of the department are encouraged to keep updated on the examination system and attend conferences and courses. We feel that an enthusiasm for learning new skills helps us to engage our students and keep lessons fresh and relevant. We aim to give students the familiarity and confidence in using industry-standard techniques and so prepare them well for their future.

MATHEMATICS at St George’s College, Weybridge

The Mathematics team is a very strong department with a mixture of thirteen committed teachers of varied backgrounds and experiences and the department benefits from strong and supportive leadership. It is envisaged that the person appointed will be enthusiastic about mathematics and enjoy teaching the subject to all levels and abilities. The willingness to teach both Pure and Applied Mathematics at A Level Maths is essential. There is also an expectation to take on some specific responsibility within the Department.

The College has intakes at 11+, 13+ (Common Entrance) and into the Sixth Form. Each year the Department and the Head of Department, in particular, are actively involved in the entrance examinations and procedures.  Many of the 11+ intake come from the Junior School with which a designated department member liaises throughout the year, so there is more than an adequate awareness of the students’ abilities prior to arrival. The marking of the Common Entrance papers by the Department similarly allows for new entrants to be fitted into the sets which increase at 13+.

The setting in Maths is flexible and it is reviewed twice a year to allow, where appropriate, for movement between sets but in the year and a half leading up to GCSE the movement is kept to a minimum. In the First and Second Years the number of sets is equivalent to the number of tutor groups of entry, whereas in the Third, Fourth and Fifth Years the number of sets is one more than the number of tutor groups of entry. This allows for ensuring that the set sizes can be adjusted according to ability, smaller set sizes for the lower ability sets.

The textbook provision for First and Second Years is predominately the Essential Maths series. For Third, Fourth and Fifth Years the textbooks are a mixture of textbooks, with other resources available for the delivery of the curriculum. The department is very well resourced, both in terms of equipment and Mathematical software.

This is a department which achieves consistently high results and this is largely due to the outstanding teachers who are very good team players. All sets will be entered for the International GCSE, with the top sets also entered for the GCSE Further Maths course. The results have always been extremely good both at GCSE and A-Level.  Mathematics is currently the most popular subject at A-Level.

At A Level Mathematics it is usual to have 100% pass rate with an A/B of 80% or higher for A Level. For Further Mathematics we have attained 75% or over at A*-A. An increasing number of students are opting to read Mathematics in Higher Education and the department encourages this. The students are prepared for the Edexcel GCE specification and the current textbook provision are those endorsed by Pearson. Teaching takes place in designated mathematics classrooms and there is an office available for all members of the Department. All classrooms have data projectors and they are equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard.

Single staff accommodation may be available on-site.

Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and shortlisted candidates may be invited for interview at short notice.

Benefits of living and working in Weybridge

Weybridge is a small popular town with a good selection of branded and independent shops, great places to eat and beautiful woodlands and canal walks. Weybridge station offers at least four trains an hour taking only 29 minutes to reach London Waterloo station.

The College is situated on the outskirts of Weybridge on an attractive 100-acre site conveniently close to the intersection of the M3 and M25 motorways and just 20 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Academics

There are over 130 teaching staff in the College with an equal split of men and women, and some staff live on campus. Rachel Owens is the incumbent Headmistress, and she and the College are members of HMC and CISC.

The school has a selective entry and is oversubscribed. The majority of children join in First Year (Year 7), although there is a smaller entry into Third Year (Year 9) and the Sixth Form (Lower Sixth). Where space allows, new students may also arrive out of these usual intakes into Second, Third and Fourth Years.

New staff and induction

There is strong support for new teaching staff starting at the College, with an extensive induction programme. Newly appointed staff are encouraged to visit in the Summer Term to receive training and guidance from the Head of Department prior to the beginning of their employment. In addition, the College offers support and on-going training for newly qualified teaching staff lead by Mr Andy Cornick, Deputy Head (Operations) who is responsible for the welfare of new staff. There is an active and social Common Room committee and a broad range of teaching staff, many who have depth of experience and knowledge of St George’s from several years with us. QTS induction is facilitated.

All the teaching staff receive excellent support from business staff: the Bursar directs over 120 College employees including administration, IT, finance and catering. The annual appraisal scheme encourages staff to develop their careers and supports them in identifying training or study to assist in their development as teachers.

We aim to provide a caring and nurturing atmosphere at our independent day school – not just for our students. For everyone who works with us too, we want to make this an enjoyable and fulfilling environment. If you’d like to be part of it, you can look forward to excelling training and support, not to mention a range of outstanding benefits.

If you enjoy working as part of a friendly team and take a real pride in a job well done, this is your opportunity to join us here at St George’s Weybridge.
