Responsibilities: Academic

(under the direction of the Head of Mathematics)

·        Teach and contribute to the department's timetable as assigned.

·        Plan and deliver engaging lessons tailored to the abilities of each group of pupils.

·        Support and nurture each pupil’s academic potential, encouraging them to achieve their best.

·        Demonstrate strong subject knowledge, staying fully informed about relevant specifications and schemes of work.

·        Serve as an enthusiastic and inspiring ambassador for Mathematics.

·        Attend departmental meetings, subject-specific discussions, and relevant INSET courses.

·        Actively participate in departmental activities and events, such as trips, societies and lectures.

·        Create and maintain a positive classroom environment that supports effective learning and adheres to school discipline policies, utilizing rewards and sanctions appropriately.

·        Monitor attendance, maintain accurate academic records, and apply the school’s assessment framework consistently.

·        Stay updated on the needs of pupils with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and incorporate these into your teaching.

·        Contribute to the preparation and marking of internal examinations, coursework, and reports, following school policy.

·        Set and assess homework regularly in accordance with departmental guidelines.

·        Adhere to all departmental and school health and safety policies, including conducting relevant risk assessments where necessary.

 

 

Other academic responsibilities:


·        Attend Parent/Teacher meetings to discuss pupils’ progress and address any concerns.

·        Communicate with parents and guardians in a polite, helpful, and effective manner as required.

·        Provide cover for absent colleagues when requested by the Head of Department or Deputy Head.

·        Participate in staff meetings, In-Service Training (INSET), and key whole-school events as designated by the Headmaster.

·        Engage actively in the school’s staff appraisal process and take part in professional development (CPD) and mutual observation initiatives.

Pastoral:

  • Serve as a tutor in the Lower, Middle, or Upper School, depending on the department’s needs and your assignment.
  • Embrace and fulfil the tutor responsibilities outlined in the Staff Handbook—your guide to all things pastoral care.


Extra-curricular:

·        Actively contribute to the school’s total curriculum programme, which typically involves assisting with activities for an average of at least two afternoons per week, as agreed with the Headmaster or Deputy Head Co-Curriculum.

·        Participate fully in the school’s Service Weekend programme, supporting its initiatives as outlined by the Headmaster or Deputy Head Co-Curriculum.

 

General:

·        Support the collective responsibilities of the teaching staff by participating in daily duty teams, as scheduled by the Deputy Head Pastoral.

·        Assist with the supervision of weekly detentions, contributing to the smooth operation of this process.

·        Take a proportional share of examination invigilation duties to ensure fair and efficient assessments.

·        Promote the safeguarding and wellbeing of pupils by exercising a duty of care and contributing to the maintenance of a safe and secure school environment.

·        Uphold the ambassadorial role of teaching at Oakham School, consistently representing the school’s values and standards.

·        Participate in whole-school marketing events, such as open days and activity days, showcasing the school’s ethos and opportunities.

·        Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the line manager to support the school’s mission and operations.

Oakham is a vibrant, fully co-educational boarding and day school for 10–18 year olds.

The School has benefited from significant investment in recent years. The latest improvements include a new classroom block for the Humanities, a stunning state-of-the-art Faculty of Social Sciences, fantastic Science facilities, a purpose-built Medical and Pastoral Centre and a major redevelopment of the Sports Centre.

The School’s location close to Rutland Water, in the heart of rural England, means our pupils and staff are able to enjoy the safety of living and working in a beautifully green campus just a few minutes’ walk from Oakham’s historic town centre and amenities.
