Maths is a core subject to the end of Year 11 with five sets of Year 11 preparing for the Mathematics International GCSE. The highest set is also entered for Additional Mathematics FSMQ. In the Sixth Form Mathematics is the most popular A level with two sets in each of Years 12 and 13 taking Maths A Level and two additional sets studying the Further Maths A level. Maths was highly rated by parents and pupils in a recent survey of performance, and examination results are both good in absolute terms and show significant value added. Large numbers are successful in the individual and team UKMT challenges with a number of students qualifying for the Olympiad rounds and the senior team reaching the national finals many times.
Teaching takes place in six dedicated, well-equipped classrooms. All teaching rooms are equipped with permanent internet access and interactive whiteboards and all teaching staff and pupils in Years 7-11 have their own iPads. Responding to the needs of the individual student – be it preparing for examinations in after-school classes or guiding the most able through Oxbridge problems – is at the heart of the faculty’s ethos.
