Job overview

The University of Liverpool Maths School (ULMaS) seeks to recruit an experienced and well qualified teacher of A-Level Mathematics and A-Level Further Mathematics to help us to deliver an outstanding curriculum to talented and highly motivated sixth form students on the campus of the University of Liverpool.  The ability to offer expertise in computer science, physics, careers or PHSCE would be an advantage.

ULMaS is the first specialist 16-19 Mathematics School in the north of England, following the examples of the highly successful Exeter Maths School and King’s College, London Maths School.

ULMaS has been established to enable children with a strong interest and high potential in the mathematical sciences to achieve global impact through careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.  Our students are being equipped to become tomorrow’s industrial and academic researchers, leaders who will address the world’s greatest challenges, and teachers who will inspire the next generation.

Our curriculum is not limited to the A-Level courses we deliver.  Students are given a broad education involving high quality experiences of the arts and humanities as well as an extra curricular programme designed to promote curiosity and develop students’ interests.  We seek teachers with a strong personal interest in their subjects and broad-ranging academic interests who enjoy challenging talented students with interesting problems and new ways of thinking.

We are looking for a teacher who:

  • enjoys tackling difficult, unseen problems
  • can bring mathematics to life and connect it to the other subjects we teach
  • enjoys supporting and inspiring talented young people on the verge of adulthood
  • enjoys supporting students preparing for challenging university admissions tests
  • enjoys learning both within their specialism and beyond
  • wants to ensure that there is equality of opportunity in the mathematical sciences
  • wants to work with similarly minded, highly motivated colleagues in a close-knit team finding imaginative ways to deliver an excellent education to our own students and those engaged with our outreach.

In return we can offer:

  • The challenge of working with exceptionally able students who have passed our selection process and achieved grade 8 or 9 in GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Physics
  • Excellent access to CPD opportunities and national and international collaboration across mathematics schools
  • A warm and welcoming school culture with down to earth leadership and a commitment to social mobility through educational excellence
  • A well funded, well equipped school at the heart of Liverpool, a short walk from the town centre and railway stations
  • A good work-life balance with a manageable timetable and a flexible, family friendly ethos
  • The opportunity to make a difference to children across the region through our outreach programme.

Working in Liverpool

The Liverpool of today is a cosmopolitan and vibrant city attracting people from all over the world who want to enjoy the good things in life whilst progressing with their career.

With a population of 7 million, England's North West incorporates the vibrant cities of Chester, Liverpool and Manchester, and is the UK's largest economic region outside London and the South East. Lying at the geographical centre of the British Isles, over 400 million people across Europe are within four hours flight. The Liverpool John Lennon airport is also the fastest growing in Europe.

As evidence of the area's new dynamism, Liverpool city centre's population has more than tripled in the last 10 years and is forecast to double again in the next 5 years.

Offering affordable housing, good schools, easy access to all other parts of the UK and Europe via road, rail and air, Liverpool provides the history, culture and sporting attractions to create a work/life balance that you and your family can enjoy.

Liverpool is in the midst of exciting economic, cultural and social regeneration. The area is central to STEM development, being at the heart of the UK's chemical, aerospace manufacturing and production industries, home to the second biggest digital industry cluster in Europe and the location of some of the most important physics and life-sciences research in Europe.

The region is the 'arts spend capital of Britain'. Three times more money was spent last year on galleries and museums in the North West than on cultural buildings in London. Added to that, childcare costs around £50 per week less in the North West than in London and weekly travel costs are less than half those in the capital.  Liverpool is the most filmed British city outside London and the city's Albert Dock contains the largest group of grade-one listed buildings in the UK.
