Job overview

We are inviting applications for the full-time permanent post of Teacher of Mathematics to join our very successful Mathematics department.

City of London School for Girls is a selective school and the entrance procedure includes a non-calculator maths examination.  As a consequence of selection, all the girls are of a good standard with much potential.

The Mathematics department at City of London School for Girls  is the biggest individual subject department in the school. There are currently twelve staff teaching Mathematics, many of whom have significant responsibilities in the school as a whole.

Girls are taught in four mixed-ability form groups for the duration of Year 7, after this  in Years 8 and  9, two parallel ‘top’ sets are selected and the remaining girls stay in four parallel ‘second’ sets.  All girls follow the same scheme of work and sit the same end-of-year examinations, but the higher sets benefit from more time on extension material.

At the end of Year 11, all girls are entered for IGCSE Mathematics, with over 95% obtaining grade A/7 or better.  Girls in the top sets are entered for OCR Additional Maths in addition to IGCSE, for which they begin studying extra material in Year 10.

Mathematics is the most popular choice at A-level with over half of the Sixth Formers taking it. There are normally three or four groups in each year group studying Maths and two groups studying Maths and Further Maths. This year we have introduced a third option of an accelerated class who study Maths and AS Further Maths which means there are currently 7 classes in Year 12.  As such, every teacher in the department is usually expected to teach at least one A Level class. A full-time member of the department would normally teach three A Level classes. Girls studying Maths are entered for Edexcel Mathematics A-Level at the end of Year 13. Girls studying Further Maths sit examinations in Mathematics at the end of Year 12 and Edexcel Further Mathematics at the end of Year 13. The department also prepares girls for Oxbridge entrance. Although teachers have preferences about whether they teach pure, mechanics or statistics, in practice all teachers are expected to be able to teach all three disciplines.

It is essential that candidates have good qualifications, either a degree or the equivalent in Mathematics, and competency in the use of ICT for administration, report writing and for carrying out the teaching of this subject.  We are also looking for candidates with good interpersonal communication skills  and a proven track record of success in teaching GCSE, A Level and Further Mathematics.

It would be desirable for candidates to have experience of teaching a range of ages from preparatory to 6th Form, including experience of preparing pupils for Oxbridge entry and to have strength in one of Statistics, Mathematical Programming or Y11-13 enrichment.

About City of London School for Girls

Academic yet unstuffy, modern yet acutely aware of its history, diverse yet with a strong sense of identity, our location in the heart of the City is definitive to the energy of our school.

City of London School for Girls is an independent day school for pupils aged 11-18 situated in the heart of the Barbican. Opened in 1894, the school provides an outstanding education for able students from all backgrounds, cultures and faiths. We capitalise on our location to attract students from all over Greater London and beyond, and give them access to every learning opportunity our capital has to offer.  This is best demonstrated by our unique geography, nestled between the brutalist Barbican and looming Roman walls. Ours is an intellectually edgy, unassuming and unpretentious environment, unshackled by tradition, and imbued with a relaxed excellence. This is a refreshing and modern place in which to learn.

Our school is one of brave academic enquiry, of intellectual wonder and of fiercely independent thinkers. It’s hard to convey the excitement of the learning at City, where ideas in these rooms become almost become bigger than the people in them, where the structures of learning can become an escape from the self and identity. City is a school which never places any artificial division on our formal academic and co-curricular provision, but celebrates the wild adventure and the fun of learning wherever it is found.
