The Mathematics department at the Fernwood School consists of 10 teaching staff and 1 numeracy support teacher. The staff are committed to the providing all students with the opportunities to thrive in their fluency, reasoning and problem solving, which is encouraged throughout key stage 3 and 4. The development of pedagogy at The Fernwood School is something we are deeply passionate about and the successful candidate would contribute to the schemes of learning with ideas, activities and resources. 

The Mathematics department continues to improve its contributions to the success of the school through examination results with Grades 9 – 5 and 9 – 7 improving year on year since the introduction of the new GCSE. The department also contributes a positive and increasing progress 8 score currently at 0.11. We, at the Fernwood School, wholeheartedly believe in the notion that ‘Every child a mathematician’ and therefore teach our students in ways that allow them to embed and deeply understand concepts to enable them to make connections across many different topics within and outside the subject. Our commitment to this is embodied in our curriculum at key stage 3 with students starting their journey with us in mixed attainment groups. This has been a highly successful endeavour, which will continue to develop and improve as we reflect on curriculum each year.

The Fernwood School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational, 11-16 academy, situated in Wollaton in Nottingham. The school has been recognised by Ofsted and the Department for Education for excellent academic standards and outstanding care and discipline. It achieved Leading Edge status for excellent practice in 2004. There are 1,016 students on the school roll.

The Fernwood School aims to provide an excellent education in a safe, well-disciplined, caring environment. The Fernwood School became a Specialist Technology College in 2005 and a Specialist School in Mathematics and Science in 2010. It is also a recognised centre of excellence for Languages, Expressive Arts and Sport.
