Job overview

Exeter Mathematics School (EMS) is a unique 6th form, created to meet the needs of able and enthusiastic Mathematics students throughout the South West. Jointly sponsored by the University of Exeter and Exeter College, it opened in September 2014. The school is a learning community in which students' needs are at the centre. EMS students expect high levels of challenge coupled with thoughtful support and guidance, working in an atmosphere that fosters creative and rigorous thinking, encourages enquiry and engenders confidence in problem solving.

All students that attend EMS study both Mathematics and Further Mathematics A-level, together with at least one of Computer Science and Physics.  They also embark on ambitious projects to prepare them for independent study at university and are able to access the curriculum and resources of Exeter College. The teaching of Mathematics is currently led by the school’s headteacher with all teachers making significant contributions to its development.

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational, highly-qualified, innovative and reflective Teacher of Mathematics. You must be committed to developing pedagogy and collaborative working and be able to challenge, stretch and support the most able students as they prepare to study mathematics-related degrees at top universities. You will be instrumental in the further development of the school, particularly outreach activities held within the school day and at weekends.

EMS is a small school, catering for just 120 students. You will be one of only 10 teachers in the school; as such you will need to work flexibly and will have a significant role in the ongoing development of the school and its curriculum.  Both experienced teachers and highly qualified NQTs are welcome to apply and we will also consider a job-share if two suitable candidates apply; experienced applicants may also be considered for the role of Lead Teacher of Mathematics. As Lead Teacher, you will need to work collaboratively with our experienced and dedicated team to enable them to best meet the needs of our students.

EMS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. All appointments are subject to satisfactory DBS checks, together with the receipt of references.

Further information about the school can be found and additional information for prospective teachers, including an application form, can be found on our website: https://www.exetermathematicsschool.ac.uk/job-opportunities. If you would like more information or the opportunity to discuss this post or visit the school, please get in touch.

Application deadline: Monday 9th April.

Interviews will take place on Monday 23rd April.
