Job overview

Following a retirement Birkdale School are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well qualified Mathematician to teach full time throughout the thriving 11 - 18 Senior School to A level. Applications are welcome from newly qualified teachers, for whom a statutory induction programme is available, or from more experienced teachers.

The Mathematics Department is consistently strong, popular and well-resourced. Within a broadly structured framework, each member of the department is encouraged to develop his or her own teaching methodology, responding flexibly to the needs and enthusiasm of classes and individuals.

Pupils in Y7 to Y11 are taught in sets according to ability.  Last year around a quarter of our pupils achieved grade 9 at GCSE (Edexcel) and around two thirds getting grade 7 or above. Many pupils in set 1 also study for the OCR Additional Mathematics qualification which provides an excellent platform for advanced study.

At A level, the Edexcel specification is again followed. Maths and Further Maths are popular subjects with typically over half of the sixth form taking one or the other. Results at A level are very good; last year, almost a half of Maths entries were A*/A, and half of the Further Maths were A*.

  • A generous remission of fees scheme is available for children of staff.
  • The school is a member of the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.

Due to the Christian ethos of the school, applications from committed Christians are particularly welcome. We are strongly committed both to the care of our pupils and of our staff. Regardless of faith or background, if you share these values, you would enjoy working at Birkdale.

We know that when people come together with different approaches and insights it can lead to a richer, and more creative environment, delivering innovative teaching to pupils. Minority ethnic groups are currently under represented in our staff body. We actively encourage applications from eligible candidates from all ethnic backgrounds.
