Job overview

Maple Hayes is a special school for 120 boys and girls with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia) from KS2 to KS4, following an appropriately modified national curriculum with the usual exception of MFL. AQA Mathematics  GCSEs are taught for all pupils.

The post, available due to retirement, would suit an enthusiastic and motivated classroom practitioner who can enthuse the learning of children with Specific Learning Difficulties. The role demands the flexibility to incorporate the school’s literacy programme into their subject’s work for which the school will provide appropriate training. It is not a requirement for the candidate to have any prior training in teaching dyslexics. Pupils usually enter school with very low literacy levels, however they make a great deal of progress. In 2020, all year 11 pupils achieved Mathematics GCSE with 61.1% achieving 4 or above. A significant minority of pupils have dyscalculia and may have gaps in their mathematical education.

The successful candidate will therefore be responsible for teaching Mathematics mainly to KS4 and upper KS3  (and possibly in upper KS2)  in conjunction with another specialist teacher and a primary specialist. Class sizes in school generally range from 10 to 12 pupils.

The information presented here is based upon normal school operation. During the Covid-19 restrictions there have been some temporary alterations to the running of the school.
