Contract: Permanent, Full Time

Salary Range: Main Teacher Scale

ELAM has a unique Maths offer for its Trainees. The majority of our Trainees who take Maths take the Level 3 Core Maths qualification while some take their GCSE resit. What makes the offer unique is that we seek to find ways to engage all Trainees by making Maths relevant and contextual. Our routes put us at the cutting edge of Maths education post-16 and we aim to ensure that Trainees leave with the financial literacy and numeracy needed to further their careers in the creative industries. As a small centre we have the opportunity to get to know our Trainees well and we enjoy the opportunity to build personalised routes for their needs.

This role would be very well suited for a Maths teacher who would like to see the real impact of Maths on the life prospects of their students and is excited about applying Maths and financial literacy to aspiring creative professionals. It is a unique role which allows for creativity in the curriculum and should appeal to those who have a vision for how financial literacy and Maths should be taught to young professionals to improve their life and career chances.

The postholder would be responsible for the planning, delivery and marking of lessons for each strand (GCSE and Level 3 courses) with the aim of achieving exceptional outcomes in all qualifications and providing a very high quality experience for the trainees on all strands of the Mathematics programme. They will also be expected to promote the Mathematics department more widely, for example through running meaningful extra-curricular activities or building relationships with external organisations to provide speakers and facilitators for Maths Masterclasses.

ELAM is a world-class 16-19 Academy which offers young people everything that they will need to lead successful lives within the music, games design and film and television industries.

Our vision is that all children growing up in the UK see themselves represented in UK culture. We believe this vision will better the creative industries of tomorrow and believe this can be achieved by increasing the access routes into those industries for talented young people. The creative industries in the UK continue to do well and are currently worth £92 billion to the economy, while growing at more than double the speed of the wider economy. However, unlike many other industries, it is not always clear how to get into these jobs and therefore there is often a lack of diversity within these sectors. Increasing the access routes to everyone will therefore increase the quality of talent and the continued growth of the sector long term.

Safeguarding our young people

To safeguard our trainees, the post for which you are applying is exempt from Section 4(2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Scheme certificate will be obtained before an offer of employment is confirmed.

About East London Arts & Music Academy (ELAM)

ELAM is a world-class 16-19 Academy which opened in September 2014. ELAM offers young people everything that they will need to lead successful lives within the music, games design and film and television sectors. We are based in Bromley-by-Bow, have Trainees from every borough in London and we are diverse in every way.

Our vision is that all children in the uk should see themselves reflected in uk culture. To do this we see our role as recruiting talented young creatives who, once they succeed, would diversify and ensure the creative industries are more representative.

We believe this can be achieved by increasing the access routes into those industries for talented young people. However, unlike many other industries, it is not always clear how to get into these jobs and therefore there is often a lack of diversity within these sectors. Increasing the access routes to everyone will therefore increase the quality of talent and the continued growth of the sector long term.

We don't do this alone

We have partnered with sector-leading organisations including YouTube, Universal Music, The BPI, Grain Media and Creative Assembly to devise a curriculum that will develop the future leaders of these sectors by meeting the relevant knowledge, skills and cultural demands. The involvement of these organisations sends a powerful message to young people that these careers are for them, they belong, that they can (and will) succeed.

Who is involved?

ELAM has been founded by a group of leading figures from industry and education. Will Kennard, Musician and one half of production duo Chase & Status, is a founder and governor. Alongside Will, the Governing body has senior executives from across the creative industries and education. We have support from a wide-range of partners from the music, film and games industries.

We work hard, we achieve high and we produce amazing creative products.

Our YouTube shows the range of talent that our Trainees have and develop - see ELAM’s vision in action here (our YouTube) and here (our most recent end of year showcasing website).

In addition, all trainees at ELAM undertake a study of Maths and English as we know written and spoken communication, problem solving, data analysis and research are the key traits of the leaders in these fields.
