Job overview

Our Maths department has transformed student outcomes and succeeded in inspiring a love of maths learning at Westminster Academy through the dedication of staff, their exceptional subject knowledge and the department’s forward-thinking approach to data and the curriculum. The Maths department is highly regarded nationally and among our student body for the care and personal support offered to students. We are now looking for an innovative teacher to join this successful team.

Westminster Academy is an Outstanding International Business and Enterprise Academy serving a multi-ethnic community in Central London. Our ethos is grounded in the IB Learner Profile; we encourage intellectual curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit and foster a real sense of communal endeavour. The Academy has gained national recognition for its work to improve outcomes for students, and its aspirational and inclusive vision. As a member of the WA community you will have the opportunity to shape the future of the Academy whilst working alongside an exceptionally talented group of teachers and leaders.

The Maths department has recently achieved outstanding results for the new specification GCSE, with 72% of students achieving grades 9-4 and 27% achieving grades 9-7. The department prides itself on its 5 year curriculum incorporating problem solving and mastery elements. The department has been the driving force behind the Academy's adoption of the Google suite, developing the use of technology in the classroom through chromebooks and leading staff training to share best practice in this area.

International Baccalaureate Maths offers teachers specialised training with the IBO, challenging content and the chance to approach maths with a global perspective. IB Maths is offered to highly motivated students, an opportunity to deepen students’ knowledge of maths in a real-life context, not just to pass exams but to encourage students to probe the reasons for learning and the relevance of maths currently in the world around them. With Standard Level Maths and the prestigious Higher Level Maths courses popular amongst both IBDP and IBCP students, we are proud that more students than ever are continuing to study maths at Key Stage 5.

The department takes advantage of local and national opportunities to encourage a passion for mathematics and nurture gifted and talented mathematicians. This starts even before students reach the Academy, with our successful Noether Club inviting students from local primary schools to join our top students in Year 7 to be enriched and challenged. WA students consistently receive a high number of individual certificates in the UKMT Maths Challenge, with students regularly progressing to the next round. In 2018 we were delighted to see WA students place second in the regional team challenge, beaten only by former UKMT champions from an independent school. We support selected Year 9 students to sit the Algebra Level 2 or 3 qualification to build confidence in algebra and bolster maths qualifications for their CVs. The Maths team also enjoy opportunities to work with other departments on extra-curricular provision, such as Dungeons and Dragons Club and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The Maths department is a collaborative team with an excellent support system. If you are an outstanding classroom practitioner and can offer an absolute focus on raising educational standards, then Westminster Academy would like to hear from you.

What we offer:

● An excellent programme of continuing professional development

● Training with the IBO for teachers delivering Key Stage 5

● The chance to shape the future of the subject in collaboration with the leadership team, external education professionals and exam boards

● The opportunity to develop personally and professionally, including mentors for NQTs, structured performance management and opportunities to advance to positions of greater responsibility

● A commitment to staff well being, including access to the local gym, weekly fitness sessions, staff social events and the end of term ‘WA Big Breakfast’

● Perkbox membership, which offers a package of benefits for staff such as retail discounts, savings on gym membership, cinema tickets and free mobile phone insurance

Closing date: 07 January 2020
