Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a teacher of A Level and GCSE Media Studies. The successful candidate will also be required to teach some KS3 English and will be working within the English Department who oversee the provision of Media Studies.

The English Department is one of our most successful departments. Outstanding teaching, team spirit, a real commitment to our pupils' progress; these qualities bind our team together and deliver excellent student outcomes. In recent years, our English Department has been singled out for recognition. You will be joining a very strong, creative, motivated and successful team in which high quality teaching and learning is always at the top of the agenda.

Media is a popular subject at Fortis Academy; we have a thriving A Level cohort and have recently introduced Key Stage 4 into our curriculum offer. Students flourish year on year when being taught by a passionate and engaging teacher.

About Fortis Academy:

This is a really exciting opportunity to work in a unique school with lots of inspiring and innovative opportunities. The campus consists of two schools, a Foundation Academy for students in KS3 and a Senior Academy for students in KS4 and 5.

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

This part of the English Department (responsible for Media Studies) sits within the Senior Academy. We expect all students to demonstrate the following characteristics in Senior Academy:

  • Can-do Attitude
  • High Expectations
  • Altruism
  • No Excuses
  • Compassion
  • Empathy

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We have a highly developed and well-established programme for providing NQTs with the necessary support to achieve a successful and smooth first year in their new careers.  It has been described as ‘an exemplar of good practice’ and is frequently praised by our partner teacher training institutions.  Fortis Academy is an excellent place to build a career.

We welcome applications from both experienced teachers and NQTs seeking an opportunity to teach in a supportive environment committed to high quality professional development.
