Job overview

Full time or part time and permanent

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional and inspiring Teacher of MFL, able to deliver any of French, German or Spanish to KS4 with a second language to at least KS3. Applications from Early Career Teachers (ECTs) or experienced teachers are encouraged and a comprehensive induction and support package would be available if appropriate.

You will be joining a successful team in a growing school, teaching across the age and attainment range at both Key Stage 3 and 4 in an environment where students are well behaved and keen to do well. At KS3, students study two periods of languages per week.  For Year 9, students may choose to study a second language as part of a mini options process. All students with a CAT score of 102 or higher follow the EBACC pathway which includes a modern foreign language.

At RMS, we are looking for a teacher who:

  • Has excellent subject knowledge and strong teaching skills
  • Is able to build positive relationships with all learners and is committed to raising attainment of all students
  • Will work collaboratively within the wider MFL team
  • Is willing to commit to extracurricular activities that add value to the school and local community
  • Is able to respond positively and creatively to the changing expectations of the subject

In return, we can offer:

  • Excellent support and fantastic opportunities for continued professional development
  • High priority given to staff and student wellbeing
  • A dedicated and hardworking team who place students at the heart of everything
  • Supportive families who value education and great students who want to learn
  • A well-resourced curriculum area
  • A broad, exciting and personalised curriculum with a focus on collaborative planning
  • A full programme of trips and visits, giving you the chance to share in making positive memories with students
  • Consistently excellent student attainment and progress

We pride ourselves on our ethos and culture which promotes positive relationships and behaviour. In our most recent Ofsted report (Nov 2022), inspectors observed that ‘“Lessons are calm and purposeful and led by knowledgeable, passionate teachers. Pupils show dedication to learning and pay close attention to their teacher’s instruction”’.

Modern foreign languages is a strong department within the school and we are proud of our record of success. We have high expectations of all our students and are committed to the personal and professional development of our staff. Our flagship CPD programme includes courses suitable for professional development at all career stages including preparation for middle and senior leadership.

Robert May’s School, which dates from 1694, is a high attaining and oversubscribed 11-16 Academy school with a distinctive ethos based on the charitable principles of our founder. We are situated in a semi-rural setting in Hampshire, with good rail and road access.

We would welcome the opportunity for an informal chat or visit. Please contact Lisa Shackleton, HR Officer on 01256 702700 or lisa.shackleton@rmays.com for further information.

Vision and values

In 1694, Robert May, a local merchant, donated money for the purpose of educating twenty-five boys to be taught at the school. This act of philanthropy set in motion a school which has had a long and vibrant journey to become the high-achieving comprehensive it is today. At Robert May’s School we are proud of our ethos, which is characterised by an unfailing belief that all students can succeed in their chosen paths and that each person in the learning community is capable of achieving excellence every day in whatever they do. Our aim is to continue the work of our Founder, to strengthen his legacy and to be both the anchor and kite for the community we serve.

We believe that academic success is fundamental and it is our job as a school to ensure that students gain the knowledge and skills they need to achieve the very best outcomes they can. Great GCSE results open doors but education is about more than just what happens in the classroom. We recognise the importance of character and want to ensure that our young people leave us confident and capable, having achieved the best they can within and beyond the classroom, poised for success and ready to make a difference to the lives of those around them.

All who are connected to Robert May’s are part of the Robert May’s community. Being a part of the Robert May’s community means you are part of something special and this is underpinned by ‘The Robert May’s Way’: Respect, Motivate, Support.
