Job overview

TEACHER OF MFL

FULL TIME, (PERMANENT)

From September 2023  French/German/Spanish

TLR available for appropriately qualified candidate if seeking responsibility

If you’re a thoughtful, discerning practitioner who enjoys the creativity of teaching languages whilst also appreciating the intellectual puzzle of second language acquisition then our successful and experienced languages team might be the perfect new home for you.

Driven by the desire for students to be successful at a subject that is traditionally seen as being hard, the team have spent the last few years getting to grips with ensuring the right foundations at KS3. This professional curiosity has paid off and languages are a popular choice at GCSE with excellent results (see the department description for more details).

At Heart of England we realise that our students can only thrive if our teachers thrive and a tired teacher with unnecessary or unproductive bureaucratic activities is unlikely to be that person. We are trying to create a blueprint for how to make the job manageable and enjoyable, driven by a culture of trust and underpinned by individual integrity. If you would like to see any of our policies before applying (e.g. our assessment policy) then please do ask.

The suitable candidate will want to contribute to the continuing development of the team and will be expected to teach two languages out of French, German and Spanish at KS3, and at least one of them to GCSE or A level. We are phasing out German but it will continue to be taught for at least another 5 years as lower school classes work their way through.

Attached to this advert is a description that aims to give a flavour of what the experience of teaching at Heart of England would be like.

We can offer a high-quality induction programme with opportunities to observe a variety of colleagues as you hone and develop your teaching practice. Our professional development programme offers all members of staff the opportunity to read and experiment with learning and teaching; if like Oscar Wilde you ‘are not young enough to know everything’, our atmosphere of being restlessly discontent may be right for you.

If you think we sound like the kind of place where you’d enjoy working then please come and visit, call for a chat, click on our website or simply apply. The future you are seeking may well be here.

Heart of England School is committed to keeping children, young people and vulnerable adults safe. The post holder is responsible for promoting and supporting a culture of vigilance with regard to safeguarding the welfare of the children, young people and vulnerable adults for whom she/he is responsible or come into contact with.

“Students make outstanding progress in the sixth form, reaching standards which are well above the national average in most subjects. There is a rising trend in the percentage of students, including the more-able, gaining the highest grades in both A- and AS-level subjects. Students eligible for free school meals do just as well as their classmates.”
