Job overview

The post and the department

This is an opportunity to join a lively and diverse Modern Languages department. The post has become available due to the retirement of our principal German teacher at A Level, along with expansion of student numbers in the International School.

Modern languages are taught across all three sections of the school.

• In the Sixth Form (the largest section of d’Overbroeck’s) we offer a wide range of foreign languages, with regular A Level groups functioning in French, German and Spanish and the option also being available of taking Italian, Russian, Mandarin and Japanese.

• In our years 7-11 day school, French and Spanish are taught as part of the core curriculum at key stage 3 and both subjects are available as GCSEs in key stage 4. German is available on request as an after-school subject.

• In the International School, students are introduced to German and French in years 7-9 and take options at IGCSE in years 10 and 11, with French, German and Spanish all being offered.

Teaching is in small groups which, at A Level, sometimes subdivide to enable second language learners and bilingual/native-level speakers to progress at appropriate rates. In Y7-11 and the International School, teaching is in classes of up to 15 students, although option groups for GCSE / IGSCE are generally smaller.

These small groups enable us to focus on students’ individual needs and help them to achieve their full potential. At all levels, we prepare students towards their next examinations but also want really to teach them the language and prepare them for continuation – for example in years 10-11 we help students to achieve their best possible results in the GCSE, but also treat them as potential future A level or university language students and equip them to be successful at a higher level. In the end, we want our students, having completed their A level, to be ready to live and work in the target language country – which is the case of quite a few of our alumni. MFL at d’Overbroeck’s is a well-equipped department, with teachers supplementing the use of textbooks and online teaching platforms with specific language-learning software. We have language libraries and film libraries, and encourage all students to read and watch films in their target language, beyond the specification requirements. We use the AQA A level specifications in French, German and Spanish and the Edexcel iGCSE specifications in years 7-11.

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
