The Role 

To provide highly effective teaching of Music, supporting the growth of co and extra curricula music and performing arts contributing to the ongoing development of the Faculty. The PE and Performing Arts faculty consists of PE, Sport, Dance, Drama and Music across all key stages. To be a full and contributing member of the PE and Performing Arts Faculty and the Academy.

The PE and Performing Arts Faculty currently encompasses a wide range of subjects including:

Key stage 3 & 4 core PE

Key stage 4 & 5 Sport (BTEC)

Key stage 3 Performing Arts 

Key stage 4 Performing Arts Dance – BTEC

Key stage 4 Performing Arts Drama - BTEC

Due to the rapid expansion of the academy we are currently looking for a colleague to teach Key stage 3 Music and Performing Arts and to re-introduce GCSE Music at Key stage 4. The ability to offer extensive extra and co curricula activities and/or second subject is welcomed and could allow for this post to be full time. The ability to offer a range of second subjects at Key stage 3 is welcomed. The following subjects are particularly welcomed: French, ICT or Science.

Key Responsibilities 

• To teach Music and Performing Arts across key stage 3 

• To re-introduce and teach Music at Key stage 4

• To teach additional subjects at key stage 3 and possibly key stage 4

• To organise and lead a wide range of extra and co-curricula musical activities including the academy Carol Service and the Cluster schools joint concert

• To oversee the work of our growing team of peripatetic music staff

• To develop the musical life of the academy

• To be a form tutor

• Participate in the academy Performance Management arrangements

Teaching and Learning 

• Plan and teach engaging and challenging lessons that pave the way for success in school and life 

• Meet the needs of all learners by consistently planning and teaching carefully differentiated lessons 

• Contribute to Faculty planning and the creation and updating of schemes of work

• Use regular, measurable and significant assessments of teaching 

• Set and mark appropriate homework 

• Complete all reporting on time 

• Closely monitor progress and attainment of all students and use it to inform teaching 

• Provide content for and, where necessary, deliver high quality student interventions with direction from the Head of Faculty

• Work to ensure that all students achieve or exceed targets 

• Maintain regular and productive communication with parents about their child’s progress, behaviour and development, including attending after school parent meetings as required

• Undertake professional development as agreed with academy leaders 

• Perform additional duties and tasks required for the effective operation of the school as directed by the Headteacher.

Person Specification: Teacher of Humanities 

Qualifications

• Good Honours Degree in Music or closely related subject

• Recognised Teaching Qualification

• Additional qualifications 

• Pastoral related qualifications

Experience

• Experience of successful teaching of Music at Key stage 3 and 4

• Experience of leading extra curricula music

• Evidence of continually improving teaching and learning 

• Experience of teaching a second subject to Key stage 3

Teaching and Learning

• Excellent classroom practitioner

• Good communication, planning and organisational skills

• Commitment to ensuring that all pupils have access to music within the academy as part of their learning experience

• Commitment to regular and on-going professional development and training to establish outstanding classroom practice.

David Nieper Academy is a co-educational secondary academy, formerly known as Alfreton Grange Art College. The school itself was first established in 1939, and adopted its current name in 2016 following its conversion into an academy. The school is currently managed by the Christopher Nieper Education Trust, an academy trust responsible for the running of David Nieper Academy. We are a growing school now of 780 students 11-18 and will soon be at our full capacity of 850 students 11-18, David Nieper Academy is larger than the average secondary school that covers an economically diverse catchment area, a fact reflected in the school’s student intake.

Values and Vision

David Nieper Academy has undergone a significant amount of change and re-organisation since becoming an academy in mid-2016. As such, the school is working hard in order to manage the transition to an academy, and keeps the needs of each individual student paramount. The school is committed to providing a range of opportunities for pupils from all backgrounds, and is currently in the process of developing a brand-new teaching block and sports facilities, including football, netball and cricket pitches, with plans existing for further development to be decided in the near future.

Ofsted

Our September 2022 Ofsted Inspection graded the academy as ‘Good in all areas’, a fantastic improvement from the ‘inadequate’ Ofsted rating when we took over the academy - and we endeavour to build on this as we grow and develop further.
