Located in East Lothian, Scotland, Knox Academy is a co-educational secondary school. Named after a 16th century theologian, Knox Academy can trace its roots back to the 14th century, but is more directly descended from a 19th century grammar school. The school has seen extensive redevelopment over the years, and has around 800 pupils in total, making it average-sized compared to other secondary schools of its type. The school can boast of a wide range of modern teaching and recreational facilities, including a gymnasium and large laying fields.

Values and Vision

Knox Academy runs an asymmetrical school week, making it unusual compared to many other British schools. Monday to Thursday, pupils attend six periods a day finishing at 4pm, whilst on Fridays they only attend three periods, leaving school at midday. The school works hard to provide a diverse curriculum suitable for all pupils, taking great pride in its comprehensive ethos. Outside the classroom, the school runs its own “Children’s University” for younger students, with them taking part in trips and learning opportunities in conjunction with a local university.

Education Scotland Inspection

“The headteacher is successfully engaging with a range of partners in the local community, including businesses. These partnerships successfully enhance the curriculum and increase young people’s successes and achievements. As a result of the school’s increasing community links, young people are engaged in volunteering and develop their leadership skills through working with local organisations.”
