Job overview

Scarborough Sixth Form College has an excellent and well-deserved reputation in the wider community for the quality of its provision. Music is an essential and vibrant part of the College’s offer and one which we would like to see grow in terms of student numbers and its presence in the College and local communities.

Music is taught in a modern, purpose built classroom with a dedicated computer suite with specialist software. In addition, there are a number of well-equipped music practice rooms. Achievement in Music is good and in 2015-16 there were 100% pass rates at AS and A2. However, for the right candidate there is still the opportunity to improve results even further, in particular in helping students to achieve the ‘next grade up’ and thus improve the progress made by these learners. The successful applicant will therefore be highly skilled as a musician, able to provide good accurate guidance to our most talented musician students, while also being able to inspire and encourage students to develop and practise more basic practical and theoretical competence.

An important feature of the role would be to build on this reputation and strengthen links with Music students and teachers in local partner schools, as well as with the Music Centre and other institutions in the surrounding area, with the ultimate aim of improving recruitment to this important subject. In addition there is scope for musical activity among students within College to be promoted and developed. The post therefore includes an additional allowance for the development and enrichment of Music in this broader sense.

Additional sessional work may also be available for candidates able to offer instrumental tuition.

The right candidate will be committed, hard-working and with a desire to bring Music to life with imaginative learning activities, content targeted to the specification, and relevant well-managed assessment. You would be well supported, and would look forward to contributing to a committed hard-working team and sharing the rewards of teaching our learners.

College Overview

Scarborough Sixth Form College is an open-access College, which provides general education primarily for 16-19 year olds in the area. The majority of our 1000+ students are full-time, and follow Advanced (level 3) courses from which most progress onto Higher Education.  The College has developed a very successful vocationally-related provision in a range of BTEC Nationals and we also offer a one-year Level 2 programme (our “Progression Year”) consisting of GCSEs in Maths, English and Science plus a range of BTEC Firsts.  Achievement at the College is high, and above national benchmarks, with outstanding positive value-added overall.  The College had an Inspection in December 2019 and was confirmed as a Good provider.

The College provides a pleasant environment in which to work, being set in attractive grounds on the edge of town. College campus facilities have been enhanced by almost £5 million investment. Scarborough itself offers an attractive coastline and beaches and is situated on the edge of the North York Moors, within easy reach of the City of York.
