Job overview

The Academy would like to appoint an enthusiastic and inspirational teacher who can offer an engaging curriculum experience in Music. This is a fantastic opportunity for a teacher who really wants to make a difference to the lives of young people. Our single goal is ‘students first’ and you will be joining a strong team of professionals working to this sole aim. Applications are invited from both newly qualified and experienced professionals.

A commitment to active participation in a busy programme of extra-curricular activities is expected within the Music department which has a tradition of flourishing Choirs, Bands and Instrumental Ensembles supported by a team of ten Instrumental teachers. You will be part of an experienced and supportive team of Expressive Arts teachers who produce an annual musical and numerous concerts within the academy and the wider community.

Just 30 minutes from Sheffield and Doncaster and with good links to both the M1 and A1, Outwood Academy Portland is a thriving learning community for both students and staff. Our staff are dedicated to securing the best possible outcomes for every student and are enormously proud of Ofsted’s Outstanding rating awarded in 2014. The hard work of both students and staff culminated in student progress placing the academy well within the top 5% of schools nationally and in 2016 88% of our students achieved A*-C grades in both English and Maths, helping place us in the top 10 schools nationally on pupil progress.

We are a warm and welcoming academy, where students are placed at the heart of everything. Behaviour across the academy is impeccable. There is an innovative focus on the development of learning and teaching, along with a wealth of exciting curriculum opportunities to ensure that students reach their full potential.

The Academy benefits from being part of the Outwood Family of Schools, which affords opportunities for staff to work and progress across several schools if desired.  We will guarantee every member of staff CPD and a further comprehensive programme of professional development is provided through the teaching school at Outwood Grange Academy.

Visits to the Academy are encouraged and warmly welcomed.

We are proud that Outwood Academy Portland is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. We are an 11-18 academy based in the large friendly town of Worksop, near Sheffield and Nottingham.

Since joining the Outwood Family in 2012, our students have achieved impressive exam result success.

We have created an educational environment where staff and students constantly strive to improve; where teachers sharpen their skills and expand their repertoires to deliver an outstanding learning experience; and where teachers, classroom assistants, mentors, tutors, inclusion support assistants and students operate as a seamless team. This enables everybody, staff and students, to not only see but also help fulfil the potential in each other. Following its latest visit, Ofsted noted that our ‘teachers and support staff comment positively about the opportunities they have for regular training to develop their skills.’

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.

We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.

If you share our vision, join our family.
