Stromness Academy has a very strong Music Department, offering national qualification courses in both Music and Music Technology in addition to instrumental tuition and extra-curricular groups. Results are outstanding in 2017 100% of pupils entered for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher achieved A or B grades.

Stromness Academy is a vibrant six year secondary school in Orkney with a catchment area covering the town of Stromness and the West Mainland. The current school roll is 340 pupils. The school is on a well-appointed campus situated in Stromness. Stromness Academy serves a dispersed population with over two thirds of the pupils being bussed into school. We are committed to providing a safe, caring and inclusive environment where all our pupils achieve. We are currently working together to create a new and shared vision for the school as we move forward. We have strong and rich partnerships with the community and are always seeking to build on our existing partnerships within the local community and further afield.

Orkney itself has much to offer a musician. Music is highly valued in the community and there is an extremely active live music scene in all genres and at all levels. Annual rock. blues and folk festivals are held, and the St Magnus International Festival attracts performers and composers of international renown.

About Stromness Academy

Stromness Academy is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form in Scotland serving students from the age of 11-18. The secondary school, situated in Orkney has approximately 374 students on record.

Stromness Academy opened in the 1870s. It was rebuilt and moved to it’s current site in 1990. Additional facilities have been added in recent years, including a music department and synthetic sports pitch – which is shared with the local primary school, Stromness Primary School.

The secondary school wishes for all students to achieve to the highest of their potential and succeed in all that they do. Students are nurtured as confident, responsible, active citizens, fully prepared for the challenges of a modern and ever changing society. The Orkney secondary school promotes the values of mutual respect and tolerance, while leadership skills are practiced through an active Pupil Council. Stromness Academy works to maintain a strong partnership with parents so that students are supported during their school and home life. Success is celebrated at the school, and students are encouraged to nurture their talents and skills through a wide range of extra-curricular activities and initiatives, ranging from sports clubs to Young Enterprise.
