You will join a school that is passionate about teaching and learning, enjoys innovation and has a significant reputation for the quality of our work within and outside the classroom.

Your role will be to ensure the continued development of our first-class academic achievements and exceptional programme of extra-curricular opportunities. The arts are very well supported in this Artsmark Gold School which has strong community links and an international outlook.

You are likely to be:

  • a strong classroom practitioner who can teach the full age and ability
  • range at KS3, 4 and 5. The ability to teach A Level Music Technology and / or A Level Music would be advantageous
  • a practising musician who is a confident and competent conductor / rehearser and has good keyboard facility
  • positive, with high expectations for student achievement
  • interested in working with established and successful ensembles but also keen to offer further enrichment.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated and inspirational teacher with the passion and drive to excel in their field.

Music at this over-subscribed Gold Arts Mark School is very strong at all levels. Music is a strength of the school and the teaching has been rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted (December 2013). Extra-curricular music making was also highlighted and 'the excellent choir and orchestra receive superb support from the school's musician in residence'.

Music is a popular and highly successful subject which has achieved excellent results. There are large GCSE music groups running in Year 10 and 11, and 25 students currently studying A Level Music and Music Technology. This year, 41% of our GCSE students achieved A* / A grades and our Music Technology class was rated as 'excellent' by ALPS. Over the past six years, over 30 of our A level musicians have gone onto study music at university or conservatoires, including Oxford and other top establishments.

The department runs a rich extra-curricular programme of ensembles and activities. Our established large ensembles include choirs, Orchestra, a String Orchestra, wind band and stage band. Several of our ensembles have competed successfully at national level, and our senior ensembles undertake international tours on a biennial basis.

We have strong links with Cambridge University and train music teachers from Homerton College. Our full time staff is complemented by a number of visiting professionals including a musician in residence and a graduate technician. The department has a team of visiting peripatetic staff from the County Music Service. Over 140 students take advantage of the lessons. In addition, we employ private instrumental tutors to complement the range of tuition we are able to offer.

Our accommodation and facilities include:

  • Over 30 iMacs running Logic Pro
  • Class set of authentic African drums
  • Class set of classical guitars and ukuleles
  • Tuned percussion for classroom use
  • 3 drum kits and samba kit
  • Well-maintained pianos.

King Edward VI School is a proudly comprehensive secondary school, founded in 1550, in the market town of Bury St Edmunds in the County of Suffolk.

Roll as at January 2024: 1198

At King Edward VI School we believe that all students are entitled to educational provision which enables them to develop their full potential and to work at the highest level in line with their ability and interest. We believe this should take place across all areas of academic achievement but should also be part of their personal and social development. Our Core Values are Curiosity, Care, Courage and Creativity. We place strong emphasis on the highest standards of behaviour and courtesy. We enjoy working with young people and preparing them to take their place as global citizens of the twenty-first century. We are proudly part of a local partnership which provides high quality education for children from 3-18 years, working closely with many local primary schools as well as Abbeygate Sixth Form and West Suffolk College.

We also have a stunning staff team here with a strong commitment to high quality teaching and learning, backed by high quality support for students, governors and parents. We have a belief that a good school is about developing the whole person, within and beyond the classroom.

In our most recent Ofsted inspection (March 2019), the school was graded as ‘good - Staff are adventurous in their choice of activities and allow pupils to take control of their learning. Pupils behave very well. They are polite, listen to their teachers, move from lesson to lesson quickly and quietly and work hard.’  A broad curriculum and extensive enrichment programme prepare students well for the next stage of their lives.’ Our most recent exam results show that the school continues to make good progress.
