Job overview

For September 2022 Wetherby Senior School are seeking to appoint a dynamic and inspirational Teacher of Physical Education to join an exciting and successful department. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about contributing fully to the department and be able to teach practical PE, coach boys’ games as well as contributing to the teaching of PE at GCSE Level. A specialism in football is preferable, however it is not essential. A willingness to play a part in the wider life of the school and to be a pastoral tutor would be an advantage.

Our sports programme gives boys the opportunity to compete at a high level in a range of sports but also understands the importance of sport in the development of all young men.  We are looking for team players with a love of sport who are able to engage and motivate the pupils and are committed to developing a love of sport and an understanding of the importance of physical fitness in all the boys at the school.

The School

Wetherby Senior School was founded in 2015 and is a member of the Alpha Plus Group of Schools. There are currently around 420 boys and this is the second year that the School has boys in every year group from Years 7 to 13.  Our first three sets of GCSE results have been excellent and we are proud to have continued this trend with our first set of A level results. Our students achieved grades that allowed them to gain places at top UK Universities such as; Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, Durham and UCL and Universities aboard such as; the University of Chicago, Pompeu Fabra Barcelona and the IE Business School Madrid.  As a result, the School’s size and reputation is growing rapidly and we now occupy two sites in Marylebone.

The Physical Education Department

There are currently four full-time members of the PE/Games department, supported by two graduate sports assistants, external coaches and other members of the teaching body to allow a broad programme of physical activity. Sport is an important part of the boys’ development and wellbeing and is a compulsory activity for all boys at Wetherby Senior School. It is a wonderful activity for developing character, building friendships and staying healthy both physically and mentally. The lessons learned and relationships forged through sport will hold our boys in good stead to make meaningful contributions to society.

The departments’ cultural framework outlines the character traits we are looking to develop and instil in boys at Wetherby Senior School. These are transferable to all aspects of their school life including co-curricular, pastoral, and academic as well as to life after School.

All boys from Year 7-10 will undertake one Games session and one core Physical Education lesson per week. From Year 11-13, each pupil will participate in two Games sessions per week, as well as fixtures and extra-curricular training sessions. Our major Winter sports are Football and Rugby, with Cricket, Tennis and Athletics in the Summer term. In Physical Education, a range of subjects are covered across Key Stages 3 and 4. These include; Youth Athletic Development, Yoga & Well-Being, Invasion Games, Athletics, Striking and Fielding, Boxercise, Swimming, Table Tennis and Spin. We take a multi model approach to our PE and Games curriculum, that is context driven in PE and focusses on Health & Well-Being, Athlete Development and Leadership Skills.

The Alpha Plus Group offers an attractive remuneration package.

Please submit applications through the Alpha Plus Portal.

Applications should reach the school no later than  23rd May 2022 at 9am. Please note that interviews may be held at any stage after applications are received, so candidates are advised to apply as soon as possible. The vacancy may be closed earlier than the specified deadline, if the right candidate is found.

About Wetherby Senior School

Wetherby Senior School is a thriving independent day school for boys aged 11-18 situated in the heart of London. Since opening in 2015 the School has grown and in September 2018 we welcomed our first cohort of Sixth Form pupils following very successful GCSE results. The School combines a rigorous academic education with an emphasis on developing the whole boy by giving him a broad educational experience and strong pastoral care.

We are an academically selective school and the main points of entry are 11+, 13+ and 16+. The School is divided into the Lower School (Years 6 to 9), Middle School (Years 10 to 11) and the Sixth Form with Heads of Section taking responsibility for each age group.

Wetherby Senior is a welcoming and dynamic place to work with a strong sense of community. The school invests in its staff with a programme of continual personal development. We seek to employ highly professional teachers with the ability and commitment to enhance the life of this School and to work effectively and collaboratively with all members of the School community to further develop the School. Our emphasis on educating the whole boy means that all members of staff, in due course, will be expected to contribute to the pastoral care of a group of students as a Form Tutor as well as contributing to the School’s co-curricular activities.
