Job overview

Westbrook Hay Prep School is an outstanding independent day school for boys and girls aged 3-13 in Hertfordshire, with an aim to develop happy, confident and successful children who are well prepared for their future.

This is a new appointment at an exciting time for girls’ sport at Westbrook Hay.  Sport is important at our school.  Physical activity is given a very generous time allowance on the timetable, with the children enjoying either PE, games or activities every day.  There are a large number of competitive fixtures against other Prep Schools and the school competes and is regularly successful at National and Regional level.

The sports’ department, which is highly regarded and very successful, has been transformed by the Director of Sport over recent years and is now one of Westbrook Hay’s crown jewels.   The successful candidate will be welcomed into a team that is energetic, highly motivated and hardworking and they are expected to show the same qualities.

We are looking for someone to work with our Director of Sport, taking particular responsibility for the teaching of girls’ games.  This person will be an important role model for our girls, in whom we aspire to instil a lifelong love of sport.

We seek a candidate, with expertise across all areas of the P.E. curriculum, to work with a department that is highly committed, confident and successful.

The role will have a particular focus on girls’ games but the successful candidate may also be allocated some PE and swimming teaching.

The successful candidate must be able to teach a classroom subject in either Key Stage Two or Three (Y7-8) or possibly both.  It is anticipated that this will be between 25-50% of the person’s timetable but, at this stage that is unconfirmed.

Our main girls’ sports are football, netball, swimming and cricket but we are keen to broaden our girls’ sports programme and extra-curricular provision.

Candidates are asked to indicate their level of coaching and umpiring experience in different sports or activities.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The deadline for receipt of applications is 10.00am, Friday February 7, 2020.

All applications will be acknowledged by email. If you have not received acknowledgement that your application has been received within two working days of sending it, please contact Sarah Whitehead,  Headmaster's PA.

Interviews will take place on Thursday 13th and Friday 14th February and will include a formal interview and the teaching of a PE lesson and a classroom lesson.  Candidates will be offered a tour of the school and lunch, if timings allow.

Our mission is to develop happy, confident and successful pupils who are well prepared for their future: Westbrook Hay is a thriving co-educational independent day school. Pupils enjoy a broad curriculum, achieve excellent results and have the all-important confidence to succeed. The school roll is currently at a record high of around 380 pupils and in September 2023 announced that it is growing its senior section of the school from Year 8 to Year 11 and will begin offering GCSEs.

Our ethos is to be a welcoming, inclusive family community that provides the best for, and expects the best from us all: The school is well known locally for its warm and welcoming atmosphere. This is something we cherish and, even though we are potentially going to grow slightly in size, we do not want to lose this ethos. We believe our ethos separates us from larger competitor schools in our locality. This ethos is generated by the staff and their relationships with the pupils and parents. It has been regularly described as ‘friendly and professional’.
