Shaping Sport at a pioneering school

School 21 is a pioneering school that opened in September 2012 in Stratford, East London. We are looking for a PE and Sports teacher who is excited about teaching the full age range in our all-through school and can take on three different roles: developing girls PE and sports in secondary to ensure both excellence and a breadth of experience, work as a pastoral leader in the secondary school developing the well-being of our pupils and collaborate with the PE team to develop a rich and exciting curriculum for pupils from 4 to 18.

School 21 has a lot of pupils who are keen on sport. We have several teams up and running from football to netball to table tennis. We have excellent provision in both primary and secondary with a state of the art sports hall, a playing field, outside MUGA and there are superb nearby facilities including on the Olympic site. We have introduced a range of enrichment activities which run at lunch, after school and as part of our Personal Challenge, these include football, basketball, fencing, boxing, basketball, Judo and table tennis. Within lessons a range of sport are covered in secondary and often taught through a project approach, previous ones include Glow Badminton, Cross-fit challenge and the Panna project.

English Language is key to everything we do at School 21 and the successful candidate will play an important part in supporting all students in their drive to become avid readers, fluent writers and confident speakers. Our oracy curriculum and teacher toolkit and our collaboration with Cambridge University has resulted in a school filled with purposeful talk and thinking. You will have the chance to shape this exciting area of the school’s culture.

Central to the ethos and design of School 21 is small coaching groups (the equivalent to tutor groups) of just 12 to 15 students. Every teacher is a coach to these students developing their well-being and aspirations and being trained as a one to one coach to nurture their growth.

About School 21:

  • 4 to 18 mixed, inclusive school in the heart of Stratford, Newham
  • Cutting edge pedagogy and curriculum
  • Small - only 75 children in each year group. From September 2017 we will have years 7 to 11, Reception to year 4, a new Sixth Form beginning and a Middle school starting for years 5 and 7 in the first year and years 5 to 8 in the second year.
  • All teachers spend between 3 to 4 hours a week with their coaching group of about 13 students
  • We have plans to set up two new schools in close proximity to School 21 which will give staff more opportunities to grow and develop.

The mission of School 21 is to empower young people to take on the world. Through a rich curriculum of ‘head’, ‘heart’ and ‘hand’ we want children knowing a lot, understanding themselves and making things happen. Our ‘dialogic approach’ to teaching helps children learn through talk and learn to talk and give everyone a voice.

We think schools should be places where children craft stunning work with real products, for real audiences and as a result of real teacher collaboration. Over the past few years our students have created immersive theatre productions depicting the French and Russian revolutions, built mechanical toys bursting with scientific craft. They have spoken out about human rights, ran campaigns to improve the biodiversity of Stratford and charted local history through photographs and poetry. Student work has been critiqued by directors and historians, professors and artists. All work is displayed, celebrated and challenged at termly Exhibitions of Beautiful Work where children tell us their stories of learning, drawing on their deep wells of oracy and well-being.
