About Cumnock Academy

Cumnock Academy is a non-denominational, co-educational secondary school, with capacity for around 1,800 pupils. Located in the town of Cumnock, East Ayrshire, the school has a large catchment area serving a number of small towns.

First founded in 1969, Cumnock Academy has seen extensive redevelopment and modernisation over the years, with the addition of modern recording studios and an astroturf pitch. While the school does not have its own playing fields, it is able to make extensive use of nearby facilities provided by the local authority.

Values and vision

As a comprehensive school, Cumnock Academy has a wide-ranging and varied curriculum on offer, with the aim of providing for the interests and strengths of all its students. The secondary school has a particular focus on music and stages an annual music show as well as running its own in-house bands and choirs.

Cumnock Academy also provides opportunities for its students to take part in competitive team sports, dance, supported study programmes and even pottery.

Inspection report

“Young people have a broad range of courses to choose from which give them good opportunities to progress. The school is using very imaginative and increasingly effective ways to improve literacy for all. Teachers in all subjects are beginning to work more closely together to develop common approaches to literacy as they start to implement a Curriculum for Excellence. The school is beginning to extend its very good links with primary schools in literacy and physical education to numeracy and other subjects.”
