Job overview

An exceptional school: Our vision is a world class education for young people in Newham. Lister is an 11-16 comprehensive school at the heart of its community.  Recognised as one of the most improved schools in the country (DfE, January 2014) this is reflected in our sustained drive to become an Outstanding school with our Progress 8 at +0.27 and our Progress 8 for disadvantaged students in the top 20% of all schools nationally.

In our December 2018 Ofsted the inspectors found that the school has maintained the good quality of education and  ‘made strong progress in many aspects of the school’s provision‘ since our last inspection in September 2013. Our many strengths are highlighted, including how students are ‘courteous and articulate’ and ‘say they enjoy school and value the wide range of opportunities they are given’. We are very proud that the report recognises our high aspirations, the hard work and good behaviour of our students, and the dedication and commitment of our staff.

The school benefits from a range of external partnerships including becoming the first partner school in the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, supported by the Andrew Lloyd Webber Music Foundation and the Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  This appointment will be conditional on successful pre-employment and enhanced DBS checks.

Required for September 2019 – subject to successful completion of recruitment checks.

We are a specialist school in Music and Science.  We are a mixed comprehensive secondary school and welcome both students and staff from a diverse multicultural background.  With over 1,600 students, we are a larger than average school in the London Borough of Newham.  The school benefits from being located in new and purpose built accommodation on a single site with ample outdoor areas and the use of an all-weather sports pitch.

The school is led by a team of senior leaders who are enthusiastic and experienced and, alongside all staff, share a positive and united vision for the school’s future.  With an improved curriculum, vertical tutoring and house systems, Lister provides a well rounded and balanced experience for students.

Specialist staff support students using a variety of communication modes such as BSL, SSE and Auditory Oral. Deaf students are taught alongside their hearing peers in mainstream classes for the majority of their lessons. Across our two primary and four secondary schools, all located in the west of the borough, we educate over 5,400 local children and young people, and employ a team of  close to 700 members of staff, the vast majority of whom live locally.
