Job overview

Do you want to share your passion for Physics?

Do you have another passion which could contribute to a vibrant co-curricular programme?

Do you want to work with motivated and ambitious young people?

Do you want to join an organisation committed to developing all its members?

Do you want to work as part of a community where relationships are prioritised over systems?

If the answer is ‘yes’ then why not apply to join us at Monkton Combe School, an independent, 13-18 day and boarding HMC school just outside Bath?

We have a long tradition of supporting and developing graduates and Early Career Teachers to become exceptional practitioners. As a smaller school (400 students) we are a community where you can ‘see the edges’ and the impact that you have is tangible. We pride ourselves on our collegial ethos and you will find yourself working with committed, friendly colleagues.

As a boarding school, with day pupils, we are seeking teachers who see their role as a way of life rather than just a job. Hours in term time are long but so are the holidays; you will find yourself supervising a Boarding House one evening a week but you could also be getting on a plane in early July for your summer holiday. You’ll also have access to a range of other employment benefits.

If you would like to have an informal chat about this position, please get in touch with Joe Sidders (Deputy Head Learning) on 01225 721108, siddersj@monkton.org.uk or on LinkedIn.

You can find the candidate information pack on the Monkton website (monktoncombeschool.com/key-information/work-with-us).

The salary offered is in accordance with the Monkton Combe Teaching Staff Salary Scale. For those without a teaching qualification, we partner with the University of Buckingham to support unqualified teachers who want to gain a PGCE on the job. We are happy to discuss this further at the interview stage. For Early Career Teachers, we support and comply with all the requirements of the ECT framework.

Monkton Combe School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

About Monkton Combe School

Monkton Combe School is an independent, co-educational, mainstream, all-through school, catering for children aged 2-18. Situated just a mile from Bath, in Somerset, the school takes boarders and day pupils. It maintains a strong Christian ethos and is proud of its exam results and reputation for good pastoral care.

Monkton Combe School was founded as a senior school in 1868 by Reverend Francis Pocock, who had previously been shipwrecked on his return from West Africa. Just six boys joined his class in the Lent term, but the school expanded over the course of 20 years and in 1888 the junior school opened. Now 400 boys and girls attend Monkton Senior.

Monkton pre-prep was founded in 1937 and caters for 120 boys and girls aged 2-7. In September 2016 it moved from Combe Down to a new building on the prep school site.

Girls joined the school in 1992 when Clarendon School merged with Monkton Combe. Clarendon continues to flourish as a girls’ boarding house at the school.

Independent Schools Inspectorate report

“A suitable induction programme for new boarders includes the assignment of a mentor, information booklets and guidance from house staff. Boarders… were confident that there are staff they can turn to for help, and they appreciated the support available from senior pupils. Effective management and leadership are exercised both at senior management level and by house parents.”
