Dunbar Grammar is a six-year, fully inclusive, comprehensive, non-denominational and co-educational school. It serves the town of Dunbar and the surrounding area. It is one of six secondary schools in East Lothian.

The present building was opened in 1961 and is situated in an attractive site in the centre of Dunbar. It has spacious playground areas and a games field within the school grounds.

The school is fully equipped for disabled access.

The school has been completely redeveloped as part of East Lothian Council's Private and Public Partnership scheme and as a result boasts excellent facilities, including a Games Hall, Fitness Room, Drama Studio and Recording Studio.

The associated primary schools are Dunbar PS, West Barn's PS, Stenton PS, Innerwick PS and East Linton PS.

The school roll in September 2018 was 958 but due to extensive building work in Dunbar and the surrounding area this is likely to grow substantially over the next few years.

The present teaching complement is around 80.

In April 2013 HMIe inspectors published an excellent report on the school.

At Dunbar Grammar we believe that every child has a gift in at least one area of the curriculum. The challenge facing us as teachers is to allow children the opportunity to discover and develop that gift.

Dunbar Grammar School (DGS) is a co-educational, non-denominational six year comprehensive in East Lothian, Scotland. In 2016 the school began a £10 million extension project to accommodate 1200 pupils, a significant expansion from the current 735 on the school roll. Completion of the project sees the creation of 15 new classrooms, a new social area with library resources and staff accommodation, as well as a new drama room and all-weather sports pitch. DGS students with an interest in Engineering have been encouraged to give contribution and feedback to the construction of the school.

The current school building was constructed in 1961, and is located in the centre of Dunbar. The coastal town of Dunbar has a population of 8,500, and is 29 miles from Edinburgh. There are five houses at the school, each named for notable places and events around Dunstable; Winterfield (the name of a local golf course and park), Cromwell (after Oliver, who won a famous battle here), Victoria (after a harbour), Castle (after the remains of one of the strongest fortresses in Scotland), and Lauderdale (after a 18th century mansion at the bottom of Dunbar High Street).
