Job overview

Stamford School is seeking to appoint a dynamic and engaging Physics teacher to join our thriving science faculty and inspire students throughout their educational journey. The successful candidate will teach Physics across the 11–18 age range. This post would suit either a recent graduate embarking on a teaching career or a more experienced teacher seeking to join a well-established department.

The Physics department at Stamford School is one that encourages innovation, experimentation, and a discursive and investigative approach to the teaching of the subject. All students at the School study physics to the end of Y11, with approximately half of the cohort currently taking the Separate Award in Edexcel IGCSE Physics; as a faculty, all three sciences are currently moving to the AQA suite of GCSE qualifications. We routinely participate in competitions provided by the Physics Olympiad and welcome the opportunity to take students on suitable excursions off-site. Our aim is to inspire students to pursue the subject post 16 with a view to potential careers in related disciplines.

The Physics department is well resourced, with the services of technicians split across the two sites of St Paul’s for KS3 Science and GCSE Physics, and St Martin’s for A level, where the AQA specification is followed. The curriculum is delivered through practical work as much as possible, and teachers and technicians spend time developing new activities. We believe that fostering a capacity in students for problem solving does much to engender critical thinking, as well as providing a transferable asset to other curriculum areas and life beyond school.

This position would suit a teacher at any stage in their career. Applications from Early Career Teachers are welcome. This is a full-time term-time teaching position. Stamford has its own salary scale and remuneration will depend on experience.

Essential Criteria

  • A good honours degree in a related subject and postgraduate certificate in education (QTS).
  • Experience of teaching or working with GCSE and Sixth Form aged students.
  • Willingness to engage with Continuing Professional Development.
  • Inspire respect and credibility through the discharge of their duties and use their expertise to influence others in relation to their subject.
  • Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of current issues relating to the personal development of young people.
  • Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of how to promote equalities and ensure inclusive teaching and learning practices.
  • Ability to inspire, challenge, motivate and empower students as they prepare for life beyond school.
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with staff, students and parents.
