Job overview

Teacher of Psychology and Sociology

Role Details

This is an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable and enthusiastic teacher of Psychology and Sociology to join a strong and well-regarded department. The role has come about as a consequence of the decision to offer Sociology at A Level in September 2018, and the successful candidate will be excited by the opportunity to work with colleagues to develop the resources and processes to make this initiative a success.

This post would suit an innovative and ambitious teacher wishing to contribute to the development of the department. Applications are welcome from candidates at all stages in their careers, with a full and recognised induction programme in place which, for NQTs, will lead to QTS.

Social Sciences Department

The Department currently consists of three teachers reporting to the Head of Psychology. This role will change to Head of Social Sciences with the introduction of Sociology.

Psychology is taught as a GCSE option in the Fourth and Fifth Form (Years 10 and 11) following the AQA syllabus. The subject is a popular choice and pupils are taught in small classes in well-equipped rooms.

There is a healthy uptake at A Level, with two full groups running in each year. Enthusiasm for Psychology and the ability to relate to students of different abilities and needs is essential.

The decision to introduce Sociology at A Level represents an exciting new development in the School’s curriculum. At present, decisions regarding examination board and specification have not been made, and the successful candidate will have a role to play in deciding upon the best route forward. Early indications regarding uptake in the Lower Sixth are positive.

Given this new initiative, coupled with the recent changes to both GCSE and A Level Psychology, a key departmental objective is to develop teaching and learning materials and methods in order to inspire and enthuse students in their learning. This represents an exciting challenge, and the right candidate will play an important role in supporting the Head of Department and her team to explore and evaluate new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Duties:

At Cokethorpe School, teachers are expected to:

· Inspire a love of learning in pupils, based on excellent subject knowledge and innovative, creative teaching techniques.

· Be accountable for the progress made by pupils, both in terms of internal and external communications – for example, through Progress Review Evenings and written reports.

· Develop strategies to support pupils in becoming independent and effective learners.

· Work with the Head of Department to promote the Psychology Department, organising extra-curricular experiences to stretch and challenge all pupils.

· Play a full and committed role in the development of the whole learning experience of pupils within the school, including participation in tutoring, the AOB programme and, if appropriate, Games.

· Take part in, and, where appropriate, contribute to a full and varied Professional Development programme.

  • A completed Cokethorpe School academic application form. Personal CVs are not required.

Interviews will be held w/c 5 February 2018.

Please note that for candidates invited to interview we will contact referees prior to the interview date.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
