Job overview

Post summary

We are seeking to appoint a teacher of Psychology, to teach A Level Psychology in the Sixth Form. The post could be either part-time (approx. 0.6) or full-time. For a full-time post, a willingness and ability to teach a second subject would be highly advantageous. In particular, the ability to teach Media Studies would be beneficial, as would a willingness to support students in Extended Project (EPQ) and independent study skills. The post is suitable for a newly or recently qualified teacher, but would also be appropriate for a more experienced teacher.

The post and the department

This is an opportunity to join a highly successful Psychology department. There has been significant increase in uptake of Psychology in recent years, with some 80 students taking the subject in years 12 and 13. The Psychology department is academically ambitious and this is reflected with students recently achieving 37% A* and 100% achieving A*-C as well as exceptional value added. In addition, we are an active department and aim to engage students outside of the classroom as much as possible with trips, guest speakers, and additional activities such as designing and selling psychologically informed alternative Valentine’s cards for charity! Psychology students are encouraged to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and as a department we support and encourage this programme.

The person

We are looking for a well-qualified, talented and ambitious teacher of Psychology who will join the department at an exciting time. We place a high degree of importance on strong academic skills and subject knowledge, as well as the ability to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject to students across the ability range. We embrace a flexible approach to teaching. A sense of fun, a readiness to respond to students’ individual needs and an open approach to teaching are qualities that we prize highly, along with a genuine commitment to working in an exceptional school environment.  d’Overbroeck’s offers teachers and students alike a friendly and welcoming environment where classes are small and standards and expectations are high.

We are very happy to receive applications from newly qualified teachers or graduates who hope to enter the profession but don’t have a PGCE. NQTs receive a full induction programme through ISTIP (http://istip.co.uk/) with the support and guidance of senior members of staff. Graduates who have not completed a PGCE receive an extensive in-house training programme. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer support and training to NQTs and recent graduates.

Necessary qualifications

All applicants will be expected to have a very good degree in Psychology or a related subject and be able to demonstrate their teaching ability. d’Overbroeck’s does not require that its staff possess a PGCE or equivalent formal teaching qualification, though most members of staff do in fact have an appropriate qualification

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
