Bohunt School Wokingham (BSW) is looking to appoint highly motivated, dynamic and innovative individuals with the desire to be part of a brand-new school; to help shape, grow and ensure the success of our new-build secondary school. The school opened in 2016 with Year 7, growing to a roll of 1200 students, aged 11-16, by September 2021, with an exciting final phase addition of a sixth form to open in September 2023. We are a heavily oversubscribed school and highly regarded, rated recently as outstanding in 2 categories by Ofsted in 2019.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be play an active part of the development and direction of the school as it grows, with rich opportunities for professional and career development both within the school and across the wider Academy Trust. Psychology is taught as part of our successful Humanities Faculty, providing further opportunity for collaborative planning and support. As a new and growing school, this represents a unique opportunity for a teacher who is looking to take full advantage of the opportunities available and develop themselves professionally. Job Description:

These tasks are not exhaustive and specific responsibilities will be negotiated and renewed with the postholder annually and in accordance with the postholder’s strengths and the strategic development needs of the School.

 Role Purpose

  • Advising and co-operating with the Headteacher, Head of Faculty and other teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements
  • Lead as required in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school
  • Co-ordinating or managing the work of other staff
  • To implement and deliver an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students and to support the curriculum areas appropriate
  • To monitor and support the overall progress and development of students as a teacher/form tutor
  • To facilitate and encourage a learning experience which provides students with the opportunity to achieve their individual potential
  • To contribute to raising standards of student attainment and achievement. To share and support the school’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for the personal and academic development of children and young people


The Post-holder will have the following responsibilities:

  • Planning well-structured lessons
  • Taking responsibility for own professional development and ensuring best practice in classroom teaching and learning
  • Providing extra-curricular opportunities that are an essential part of subject provision
  • Keeping subject knowledge up to date
  • Contributing to the development of schemes of work and department resources
  • Contributing to preparing for changes to pedagogy and curriculum expectations
  • Contributing to the implementation of new courses within the subject area
  • Attending department/faculty and pastoral meetings as part of directed time
  • Contributing fully to the co-curricular programme within the department and culture of our school
  • Leading the development of the subject area


Teaching, Learning and Assessment in Psychology:

  • Demonstrate excellent practice in teaching
  • Carry out teaching duties in accordance with the school's schemes of work
  • Liaise with colleagues to develop and deliver programmes of study in a collaborative way
  • Work with LSAs, teaching assistants and the SENDCO
  • To set targets for student attainment levels based on effective use of data that incorporate suitable challenge
  • Set work for students absent from school
  • Mark and return work within the five-week period outlined in the Feedback Policy, providing feedback and targets
  • Regularly reviewing the attainment outcomes of students taught and assessing and quantifying impact on students’ learning of own teaching.
  • Writing reports for students as part of the school review cycle
  • Liaise with parents and attend virtual parents’ evenings
  • Work within the Code of Practice relating to Special Educational Needs, Standards and quality assurance
  • Support the aims and ethos of the school as identified in the SEF, School Development Plan and school handbook
  • Ensure awareness of national developments relevant to subject and current best practice
  • Undertaking performance management
  • Promote and model good relationships with students, colleagues and parents
  • Uphold the Trust’s code of conduct
  • Participate in staff training and take a lead in own professional development
  • Develop links with governors, Trust and locality networks
  • Actively seek the views of parents and learners as part of the self-evaluation process


Other responsibilities:

  • To uphold the school’s values at all times, ensuring students “Enjoy Respect Achieve” in all aspects of their education throughout their time at BWOK
  • Acting as a form tutor and supporting the personal, social and spiritual well-being of students in every aspect of your work
  • Participating in school cross-curricular days such as Drop Down Days for PSHE and personal development
  • Participation and contribution to the organisation of school visits and trips that complement learning
  • Supervision of students outside of lesson time in morning and afternoon sessions for example during lesson changeovers
  • Providing students’ work for classroom display
  • Regular attendance at meetings and parents’ evenings that are part of directed time

Bohunt School Wokingham opened its doors to Year 7 pupils in 2016. Having grown substantially since then, we are now heavily oversubscribed, with a school roll of 1200 students aged 11-16. With the exciting announcement of our expansion to include a sixth form and additional spaces in all year groups, we will soon see more students through to 18.

Our ethos of ‘enjoy, respect, achieve’ underpins our vision to give all students an outstanding education and develop skills in the classroom and beyond. These core values help our students flourish throughout their school career, and on into later life. Reflective of the success achieved in its first three years, Ofsted recognised that the “overall educational experience for many pupils at the school is ‘life-changing’.”

Our new site has been designed and built with education at the forefront and includes specialist teaching spaces and a whole school one to one iPad provision, as well a wide range of sports and extra-curricular provision. We are leaders in outdoor education with an outdoor classroom, the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and Big Expeditions to wilderness locations, alongside a variety of other trips at home and abroad.

We are part of the supportive and innovative Bohunt Education Trust, a MAT with eight schools including two Sixth Forms and a boarding facility. We may be separated geographically, however, all BET schools are student centred, sharing an uncompromising belief in high achievement and unconditional positive expectations, a real sense of community and a dynamic, innovative approach to education.
