Job overview
The school is looking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic individual as a teacher of RE with some History. This vacancy has arisen as a maternity cover to continue to support the RE department in developing greater specialism within this key department. All students now study for GCSE RE (either full course or short course) as it is a core subject for us as a Church of England High School. As a Voluntary Controlled School the basis for the delivery of RE is the SACRE scheme of work, but this is enriched with elements from the Illuminating Pathways programme developed by the Diocese.
Praise for the RE department and its leadership was highlighted in our excellent SIAMS report from June 2019:
“All pupils can explain the importance of RE and its impact on their personal spirituality. Pupils of different faiths and backgrounds can readily re-interpret the vision in the light of their own beliefs. The curriculum has an excellent balance between religious and other views. As an example, pupils readily explain and assess the impact of religious beliefs on ethical issues. The quality and range of their theological thinking is impressive. They have excellent knowledge of other world religions and recognise the importance of this in promoting global understanding.”
The role also has some KS3 History teaching although there may be some flexibility to adjust the balance of teaching in this role between RE and History dependent upon the skills of the appointed candidate. This is to ensure that the school can appoint the best candidate who shares the values and aspirations that will make them a part of the Balshaw’s family, able to get the very best outcomes for the students in their care.
We are looking to recruit the best teacher possible to this role whether they are an NQT or an experienced teacher looking for the opportunity to work in an outstanding department in an outstanding school.
This post is a fixed term contract for a maternity cover until 31st August, 2021 or until the post holder returns, whichever is the sooner.

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.
Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.
