Job overview

Teacher of RE, Citizenship and/or Sociology

Salary: MPS/UPS – NQTs welcome to apply

To start: September 2018

Horizon Community College, Barnsley, opened in September 2012. With nearly £50 million worth of investment, facilities in this new Community College are among the very best in the country. In July 2014, Ofsted judged that ‘Horizon Community College is a good school. Attainment has improved rapidly in all year groups since the college opened.’

In 2017, under the new grading system, 61% of Horizon students gained 5 A*-C or equivalent, including English and Maths. This followed 2016 figures that were 8% above the national average, building on excellent performances in the College’s first four years and placing Horizon’s results in the top 27% of schools nationally.

The College is delighted to be able to offer the right candidate the opportunity to lead our highly successful Religious Education, Citizenship and Sociology department, which plays a key role within an ambitious and forward thinking school environment.

Religious Education is a core subject for all students through to GCSE. All of our students are entered for full course GCSE and in 2017 we achieved our best ever results with 69% A*-C and 31% A*-A. The uptake of GCSE Sociology is extremely popular, which also achieved stunning results in 2017 with over 70% A*-C and 31% A*-A. Students in Y7-9 study one hour of Citizenship and one hour of Religious Education a week; through a well-planned linear curriculum these subjects lay the foundations for our successful GCSE courses.

We are looking for a highly motivated, creative and inspiring teacher to be part of the continued success in this department, during this exciting period of change in education nationally. We are very proud to have a team of eight specialist RE/Citizenship/Sociology teachers and we are looking for an enthusiastic leader, with a passion for their subject, who can bring out the best in this committed and hard-working team. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach RE and Citizenship, with previous experience in the delivery of Sociology desirable but not essential.

Horizon also offers the successful candidate a whole-hearted commitment to professional learning that places individual development at the heart of its ethos. The College provides an excellent in-house training programme of Continuing Professional Development for NQTs, RQTs and beyond, enabling staff to benefit from excellent opportunities to enhance their practice and realise their career potential.

For full details, to discuss the role or to request an application pack, please contact our recruitment partner Jessica Galvin at Hays Education on jessica.galvin@hays.com or 0114 217 1556. We welcome visits from potential candidates - please contact Jessica Galvin to arrange this.

The closing date for this post is Monday 19th February 2018 at 12 noon.

Interview dates are to be confirmed.

This College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. A criminal records bureau check will be undertaken for the successful applicant.

Why work at Horizon?

Thank you for your interest in joining Horizon Community College, a school which is ‘the cornerstone of the local area‘ where ’pupils’ behaviour in lessons is excellent’ and ‘staff are exceptionally proud to work at the school.’

The economic, cultural and social landscape of Barnsley is changing. Opportunities in further education, higher education and professional roles are increasing; opportunities for individuals to shape their own career pathways are growing; opportunities for individuals to challenge traditional socio-economic patterns are multiplying.

At Horizon Community College, our responsibility is to prepare students for this reality. We want young people to leave the College well qualified and with a unique skill set that will enable them to stand out from the crowd. We want young people to be in possession of a passport of qualifications and employability skills that will enable them to pursue exciting careers, attend prestigious universities, complete dynamic apprenticeships and play leading roles in regenerating this area and beyond.

Our curriculum is tailored to the needs of and meets our ambition for each individual student. This is underpinned by the College’s core values which help to prepare every student for a lifetime of success. Our Curriculum and Culture ambition:

  • aims to challenge every learner, in every lesson, every day
  • develops the character and skill set of all, through the belief that we are ‘Positive Role Models’
  • ensures opportunities for all through our personal development and Careers and Enterprise programmes.

Successful education is also about working in close partnership with our families and the community to ensure our students succeed in each School year and are prepared for the next appropriate phase of their education. We work together to empower our students to believe that anything and everything is possible.

We heavily invest in the growth and development of our entire workforce, so they are also prepared for the next phase of their careers. We promote ‘one team’ working hard to support each other. We are focused on continued professional development for staff at every level, and especially offer an excellent provision for early career teachers.

We embed a curriculum and culture that results in Equity of Opportunity, Strong Community, High Expectations, Global Readiness and Kindness so that our students are School ready; Work ready; Life ready.

Our school is going from strength to strength. Since our opening, we have been given a 'GOOD' from Ofsted in every inspection, with our most recent (October 2023) recommending the school as potentially ’OUTSTANDING’ in every category. I have no doubt that with the continued hard work put in from both staff and students that we will achieve this recommendation shortly.
