Religious Education Teacher – Full Time

ECT/MPS/UPS (£26,948 -42,780)

Required from September 2022

We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

Would you like to start, or develop you career further as a Religious Education teacher in a well established and supportive department in an excellent school? Required for September 2022, a suitably qualified Religious Education teacher to work in our successful Religious Education department.   Religious Education is a popular subject at the school with established courses at GCSE and A-Level.  As a Core Subject, students in Years 7-11 will study Religious Education for 10% of their curriculum time. All students at St Mary’s Catholic School study GCSE Religious Studies. Religious Studies is also popular at A Level, with students frequently going on to choose to study degrees in or with a significant element of Religious Studies, such as Theology and Philosophy & Ethics.

The successful candidate would be expected to teach across the full age and ability range. The department also works closely with the pastoral team and music department to deliver a thriving programme of retreats and liturgies.

Our most recent S48 inspection (January 2018) highlights that “Pupils are provided with an inspiring, vibrant and engaging curriculum…high quality teaching and learning ensures that all pupils achieve their full potential… lessons are well crafted by expert teachers and learning is challenging and inspiring”.  We are in a very strong position to maintain this S48 grading at the next inspection.

We have a strong record of supporting ECT’s and experienced staff are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.

Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity.  Our Surveys show that 96% of staff enjoy their work at St Marys, 97% agree that leaders do all they can to ensure a motivated and respected staff, 100% of students enjoy their learning and believe that behaviour around the school is good, and 97% of parents would recommend St. Mary’s to other parents.  We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.  Students are keen to learn, colleagues are supportive, and there is a strong sense of inclusion and belonging where our Catholic ethos pervades all aspects of school life.

Added to this, the school is also at an extremely exciting juncture in its future. We are a founding member in the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy Trust formed on 1st September 2021. Demand is high, and owing to intense oversubscription, we will be 5 years through expansion to 6FE, with an extra-ordinary 7FE in Sept 2021.  We have also won over £7.5m in capital bids in the last 4 years and are enjoying brand new cutting edge facilities as a result.  The school faces an extremely strong and positive financial future.

Visits to the school are warmly encouraged. Please email recruitment@stmarys.net or call 01279 654901 x235 to arrange a visit.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants.  St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
