Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a teacher of Religious Studies to join our Humanities Faculty from September 2023. The successful applicant will be required to teach Religious Studies at Key Stages 3 & 4. There is also an opportunity to teach A Level Philosophy at KS5. The ability to teach A Level Philosophy and/or Sociology is an advantage. This post is equally suitable for a newly qualified or a more experienced teacher; ECTs are encouraged to apply.

Religious Education and Philosophy enables students to discover beliefs, teachings and practices (and the rationales behind them) upheld by people from an array of backgrounds. Students are encouraged to consider, debate and discuss a wide range of religious, philosophical and ethical issues. Our curriculum is in-line with the Herts Locally Agreed Syllabus and supports the development of our school character values through our chosen topics. The vision of the RE department is to produce students that are prepared for life in the modern world and in multi-cultural Britain and students that are philosophically enlightened. The RE curriculum is primarily knowledge based. It is designed to equip students with the knowledge they need as citizens of a multicultural country and also to support the many students who go on to study the subject at GCSE and A Level. It incorporates themes and concepts, referring to them frequently. Students’ understanding is assessed frequently through low-stakes testing, assessment for learning, as well as formal half termly assessments.

The impact of our RE curriculum and the strength of our Humanities Faculty is reflected in student numbers and outcomes. In 2021/22 54% of students obtained an A*-B Grade in Philosophy at A Level. At GCSE 80% of students obtained a Grade 9-4 in Religious Studies with 28% of students getting a Grade 7-9. A large number of our students study at least one Humanities subject at KS4 and KS5. It is common for us to have at least one GCSE RS class in Year 10 and in Year 11 and one A Level Philosophy class in Year 12 and in Year 13.

school website or www.thehhex.com.

The Hemel Hempstead School is a popular oversubscribed school sited in pleasant grounds in the village of Boxmoor close to national rail and road links to London. Our last OFSTED inspection in October 2021 confirmed that this is a good school, where pupils get a high-quality education and that they develop the knowledge they need to achieve well in all subjects and that this is the same for all pupils, with nobody being left behind. They noticed that our pupils are keen to learn and concentrate hard in their lessons and that our pupils behave well because they understand what they’re learning. They said that behaviour is calm around the school site and that pupils say their teachers are helpful in dealing with their concerns and make them feel safe at school. Pupils told Ofsted that they are happy at this school because their welfare is carefully supported.

We are an expanding school, having been asked by Hertfordshire to increase to 217 students in each year group and we have over 250 students in the Sixth Form. This allows us to recruit new colleagues and increase the broad range of academically rigorous courses we offer. Our facilities are excellent with world-class indoor and outdoor sporting facilities, a brand-new music, languages and science centre and plans for further improvements across the site. In September 2025 we will have a brand-new school building.

This is an exciting time for the school as we will shortly convert to Academy status and join Scholars Education Trust.

Closing date: 23/02/2023 12:00:00
