Job overview

TEACHER OF RESISTANT MATERIALS AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

Required from September 2023 Full time – temporary for one year

(Would consider a January start for a teacher in post)

Grade: MPR/UPR – looking for best candidate whether an ECT or highly experienced teacher

The Role:

The school is looking to appoint a committed, enthusiastic individual as a teacher of Resistant Materials at KS4 who also has the ability to teach across the D&T subjects at KS3. This position has become available because of the relocation of an existing member of staff. We are looking for the best possible candidate irrespective of whether they are an ECT or a highly experienced teacher.

This position is temporary for one year in the first instance. The reason for this is that the intent and implementation of the KS3 D&T Curriculum will be redesigned for September 2024 so that it no longer needs to be blocked at KS3.

This position has 13.5 hours of scheduled classes per week, the remainder of timetabled classes consisting of allocated cover. This will provide the candidate time to get to know the department, its schemes of learning and all the equipment really well. The position also includes one KS3 Art class, so the additional time will allow the successful candidate to be able to familiarise themselves with the Art Scheme of Learning for the art class.

The Design & Technology Department: The Design Technology Department has consistently been one of the strongest performing departments within the school and this is a great opportunity to join a well-resourced, high performing and supportive team.

Within the Design Technology department, a carousel of the disciplines is taught that includes Graphic Design, Textiles and Resistant Materials. Food and Nutrition is also taught within the KS3 carousel but is delivered by Food specialists. Pupils opt for Design and Technology or Food Preparation and Nutrition at KS4.

The Technology department is experienced and hardworking and supported well by our Technology Technician. The facilities are excellent having been designed and purpose built as part of our previous Technology Specialist status. All students in the school have laptop devices meaning that they can access resources, digital creativity, work collaboratively and share materials very easily through the Office environment and Synergy, our learning platform.

There are excellent working relationships between staff and students who are well motivated and keen to succeed.

The closing date is 9.00am on Friday 9th June

About Balshaw's Church Of England High School

Balshaw’s is a mixed, comprehensive, Church of England secondary school without sixth form situated in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a community state school operating under the Diocese of Blackburn. An average-sized school, it will provide 925 places for students aged 11-16, when fully subscribed.

Balshaw's was founded as a charity school in Leyland in June 1782 by Richard Balshaw. It moved to its current Church Road site in September 1932. Although the school has no official sixth-form, it works closely with nearby Runshaw College, which was originally set up in 1974 to cater for school-leavers from Balshaw's and Parklands High School.

Ofsted

“Under the exceptional leadership of the headteacher, students and staff flourish at Balshaw’s. Governors and all leaders and managers waste no time in tackling the slightest weakness so students’ achievement is outstanding. Students behave extremely well. They say how very safe they feel and are particularly appreciative of the exceptional personal support which the school gives them.”
