Job overview

Welcome to Greater Peterborough UTC. We are proud to be Peterborough’s first STEM-specialist school, giving young people the chance to follow a unique academic and technical curriculum into higher education or the world of work.

Our £25 million campus was opened in September 2016 and has rapidly established itself as one of the highest performing schools in the area. Our campus includes industry-standard workshops and IT design studios, as well as specialist science labs and state of the art digital engineering equipment.

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an inspirational and experienced teacher of Science to join our friendly and forward-thinking team at Greater Peterborough UTC. This is an ideal position for someone who is excited to embrace an opportunity to progress in their career in a supportive and innovative environment, and is excited to have their ideas implemented into a core curriculum.

The candidate will have excellent subject knowledge and a record of motivating students through carefully planned and delivered lessons at key stage 3 and key stage 4; an opportunity to teach at key stage 5 will be available. Participation in the raising of attainment across groups of students alongside a willingness to engage in whole academy initiatives are essential qualities. A specialism in Physics is preferred but not essential.

In October of 2022 the GPUTC was graded as ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted, these judgements are testament to the culture we have created here at the GPUTC, one in which our students are treated with respect and dignity, a culture that is creating the workforce of tomorrow, we are extremely proud of the outcomes and especially some of the feedback which included comments such as:

  • Pupils behave well. They say they want to learn
  • Leaders are ambitious for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
  • The curriculum is well designed, and the content progressively builds upon pupils’ prior learning. This allows pupils, including sixth-form students, to develop important knowledge and skills over time.
  • Teachers have expert knowledge. They use subject-specific language. Pupils confidently use this language when talking about their learning.
  • Pupils respond well to leaders’ clear expectations of behaviour. As soon as they join the school, pupils feel well supported and build strong relationships with other pupils.
  • Leaders provide opportunities for pupils, including those in the sixth form, to engage with employers, UTC sponsors and local universities. This gives them a solid foundation upon which to plan their next steps.

What makes Greater Peterborough UTC, and the Trust as a whole different is that we know how to nurture and bring out the very best in our talented staff, which is then reflected in our students. The Meridian Trust is a success story that continues to grow, and part of our success is down to our ability to Recruit, Develop and Retain the very best teachers. It is also driven by our ability to adapt to the changing educational landscape led by determined staff who bring our academies alive with their enthusiastic personalities, unshakeable work ethic and their commitment to delivering exceptional learning experiences for our students.

In return, we can offer you:

  • Dedicated support at both academy and trust level
  • A philosophy of 100% achievement and inclusion
  • A commitment to extending the boundaries of learning, enabling all students to become well-rounded individuals
  • A purposeful and caring learning environment, where every individual is known, valued and supported
  • Motivated, engaged students and ambitious, invested and professional staff
  • A culture of promoting leadership, innovation and staff progression - we are committed to retaining good teachers and partnership working through our Teaching School status within our family of schools.

We offer the opportunity to work for a trust which places valuing colleagues at the heart of what we do. You will be joining a team of 150+ Science colleagues across our family of schools with plenty of opportunities to collaborate and share ideas.

Our subject offer:

About Greater Peterborough UTC

About Greater Peterborough UTC

‘Creating the Workforce of Tomorrow’

’Greater Peterborough University Technical College (GPUTC) is a STEM specialist school currently for students aged 11 to 19. Located in Peterborough city centre, the £12 million school opened in September 2016 to help create the city’s future scientists, engineers, designers, architects and construction specialists of the future. UTC’s are secondary schools for young people that are sponsored by a university and local employers. They were set up by the government to encourage young people to study technical subjects and to give them the opportunity to learn the skills that employers are looking for.

GPUTC is a valued member of the Meridian Trust and as such benefits from a supportive network of leadership at senior and subject level and is fully integrated and accessing all support services such as HR and financial support. In 2022, the first year of year 7 students, GPUTC was oversubscribed with many parents wanting not only a smaller school for their child but also one which specialises in a STEM curriculum.  In Key Stage 4, which from 2023 will start in year 9, students can study separate sciences, engineering and the built environment (made up of architecture, design, surveying and construction) along with their core GCSE subjects. Students are also given the opportunity to pick from computer science, art and design and some humanities subjects all of which augment a STEM rich curriculum.  In year 12 students may commit themselves to, from 2023, T ’Levels in ‘Engineering and Manufacturing’ and ‘Health Care Science’ there will also be a traditional route of A Levels in such subjects as Maths, Science and Product Design.
